Overview
Dio Brando (later known simply as DIO) is the primary antagonist of Part 1 (Phantom Blood) and Part 3 (Stardust Crusaders) of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Born in 19th-century London, he entered the wealthy Joestar family as an adopted son before renouncing his humanity using the Stone Mask to become an immortal vampire. Possessing immense intellect, ruthlessness, and an overwhelming dark charisma, he commands absolute loyalty from underlings who view him as a savior of evil. His actions initiate a multi-generational conflict against the Joestar bloodline, securing his place as one of the narrative's central and most influential figures.
Appearance
Dio is a tall, muscular British man with blonde hair, sharp eyes, pale skin, and a slender waist. His smiles reveal dimples and pointed fangs, and he has birthmark moles on his ear. His eye color varies between green, gold, amber, and red depending on the medium and his vampiric state. After becoming a vampire in the TV anime, his hair takes on a lightning-like shape. His attire includes headbands, wristbands, cloaks, backless tops, suspender trousers, tight-fitting clothes, and shoes with upturned toes.
Personality
Dio is intensely arrogant, ruthless, and driven by an insatiable ambition to stand above all others. Extremely competitive, he detests being looked down upon and exhibits an overwhelming desire for control. Beneath his elegant, cultured facade lies a cold, calculating mind willing to commit any atrocities to achieve his goals. Despite his absolute wickedness, he possesses a reflective, diligent work ethic, constantly studying and striving to push past his physical and mental limits. He harbors deep hatred for his abusive father, while maintaining a complex mixture of envy, resentment, and profound respect for his adoptive brother Jonathan Joestar's unyielding courage.
Abilities
Through the Stone Mask, Dio transformed into an immortal vampire possessing supernatural physical strength, rapid regeneration, and hypnotism. He can instantly freeze opponents by vaporizing body moisture ("Vaporization Freezing Technique"), fire pressurized ocular fluid like armor-piercing projectiles ("Space Ripper Stingy Eyes"), and siphon blood to turn others into zombies. By implanting his own cells ("Flesh Buds") into a target's forehead, he gains absolute brainwashing control. His Stand, "The World," is a powerful short-range type with exceptional speed and a ten-meter radius. Its primary ability is halting time itself for several seconds, during which Dio alone can freely interact with his environment. He can also use a spirit photography ability via Jonathan's body.
Background
Raised in the London slums, Dio poisoned his abusive father before taking advantage of a debt owed to him to enter the wealthy Joestar household as an adopted son. He systematically tried to break his adoptive brother, Jonathan Joestar, and eventually plotted to steal the family fortune. When his scheme was exposed, he put on the ancient Stone Mask, forfeiting his humanity to become a vampire. After several brutal clashes, Dio decapitated Jonathan on a ship in 1889, attached his own head to Jonathan's body, and sank into the ocean depths inside a coffin. Rescued nearly a century later in 1983, he established a base in Cairo, Egypt, assembling loyal Stand users until he was finally defeated and destroyed by Jotaro Kujo.
Relationships
Dio held intense hatred for his biological father, Dario Brando, while cherishing his deceased mother. His bond with his adoptive brother and nemesis, Jonathan Joestar, evolved from malicious rivalry to a complex respect for Jonathan's heroic virtue, culminating in Dio taking over Jonathan's body. He forcibly kissed Erina Pendleton to humiliate Jonathan. In later years, he developed a deep spiritual friendship with Enrico Pucci and received guidance from Enya the Hag regarding Stand powers. Fanatical followers like Vanilla Ice and N'Doul pledged absolute loyalty to his dark charisma. He also fathered several illegitimate children, including Giorno Giovanna.
Trivia
Series creator Hirohiko Araki designed Dio as the embodiment of "ultimate evil" and dark coolness, drawing visual inspiration from Western pop idols. His name derives from American musician Ronnie James Dio and actor Marlon Brando. He is famous for frequently using the word "useless" as a catchphrase during battle. The twin cylinders on the back of his Stand, The World, were inspired by scuba divers' oxygen tanks. Additionally, while the heart-shaped pads on the Stand's elbows and knees appeared in the original Part 3 manga, they were later updated to feature "D" logo emblems in subsequent artwork.
