Overview
Illuso is an antagonist appearing in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, the fifth part of the series. He serves as a Stand user within La Squadra Esecuzioni, a rogue assassin faction of the Italian mafia organization Passione. Illuso acts as a formidable opponent who ambushes the protagonist group at the ancient ruins of Pompeii, utilizing his unique mirror-based Stand abilities to isolate and eliminate his targets.
Appearance
Standing 188 centimeters tall, Illuso features black hair styled into six braided pigtails. His eyes are depicted as purple in the colored manga and red in the television anime adaptation. He wears a thick down-style garment that leaves his midriff exposed, giving him a look reminiscent of Native American attire. In addition, his posture and gestures feature distinctive movements, such as tilting his chin upward and taking moonwalk-like stances.
Personality
Illuso possesses an arrogant and boastful temperament, holding supreme confidence in the safety and superiority of his mirror domain. He frequently talks down to others and looks down upon abilities he deems unimpressive. However, when his calculations fail or he encounters unexpected retaliation, he quickly loses his calm demeanor and exhibits extreme panic. Despite being flustered, he does not succumb to despair, rapidly employing keen observation and ruthless determination to counterattack.
Abilities
Illuso's Stand is Man in the Mirror, a humanoid entity wearing goggles over its face. Its statistics are C in Destructive Power, C in Speed, B in Range (extending up to several hundred meters inside the mirror world), D in Persistence, C in Precision, and E in Growth Potential. The Stand creates and accesses an alternate world within mirrors, allowing Illuso to travel through reflections undetected. By satisfying the conditions of a target noticing his reflection and being reflected in a mirror, Illuso can drag the individual into the mirror world. He can selectively permit entry, enabling him to pull in a target's body while isolating their Stand outside. Within the mirror world, unpermitted individuals cannot interact with objects. However, because his ability cannot automatically distinguish between a Stand and its user, mistaking a Stand for a user allows the enemy Stand to enter the dimension.
Background
As a member of Passione's La Squadra Esecuzioni, Illuso pursued the protagonist group to block their mission for the mafia Boss. Learning of their destination, he laid an ambush at the ancient ruins of Pompeii to intercept Pannacotta Fugo, Leone Abbacchio, and Giorno Giovanna, who were dispatched to retrieve a hidden key. Using his Stand, Illuso trapped Fugo and Abbacchio within his mirror domain, pushing them into severe danger. However, Abbacchio severed his own hand to transfer the key to Giorno. Illuso then dragged Giorno into the mirror, unaware that Giorno had intentionally infected himself with Purple Haze's deadly virus. Contracted with the lethal virus, Illuso amputated his own left arm to break free into the physical world. Upon emerging, he was exposed directly to Purple Haze's relentless assault and virus, ultimately dissolving into nothingness.
Relationships
Illuso belongs to La Squadra Esecuzioni under the leadership of Risotto Nero, alongside teammates such as Formaggio, Melone, Ghiaccio, Prosciutto, and Pesci. He shares a particularly close camaraderie with Formaggio, frequently exchanging lighthearted banter and spending leisure time together. During the battle at Pompeii, he acted as a deadly antagonist against Pannacotta Fugo, Leone Abbacchio, and Giorno Giovanna. Additionally, in the spin-off novel Purple Haze Feedback, he is established as the killer of Sheila E's elder sister.
Trivia
Illuso's name is derived from the Italian word for illusion or phantom. Both his Stand name, Man in the Mirror, and several of his distinctive poses serve as homages to the musician Michael Jackson and his famous song. According to official character height comparisons for the television anime adaptation, Illuso stands at 188 centimeters, making him one of the tallest members of La Squadra Esecuzioni. Furthermore, fans annually celebrate Illuso Festival on November 30th (designated as Mirror Day in Japan) by sharing fan art dedicated to him on social media.
