Overview
Jonathan Joestar is the lead protagonist of Phantom Blood, the first part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. As the heir to the noble Joestar family in 1880s Britain, he serves as the primary character whose conflict with his adoptive brother initiates the overall story across generations. Studying archaeology at university while excelling at rugby, he is depicted as a physical powerhouse who holds steadfast to a high code of personal honor, chivalry, and justice.
Appearance
Jonathan is a heavily built man standing 195 cm tall and weighing 105 kg, featuring an exceptionally muscular frame with broad shoulders, thick limbs, and a solid neck. His hair is portrayed as dark or blue-tinged, and his eyes are rendered in shades of blue, green, or black depending on the medium. A star-shaped birthmark is located on the back of his neck. During battles, he is often seen wearing fingerless gloves.
Personality
Jonathan is defined by a noble, highly compassionate, and polite disposition, embodying the ideals of a classic gentleman. He exhibits a generous, self-sacrificing nature, often displaying empathy even toward his opponents. While normally soft-spoken and forgiving to a fault, he possesses an explosive inner reserve of courageous fury when loved ones or personal honor are threatened, enduring extreme physical and mental hardship without compromising his moral convictions.
Abilities
Even before learning Hamon, Jonathan possesses raw strength capable of physically overpowering formidable foes. Under Will Anthonio Zeppeli, he masters the art of Hamon, manipulating martial energy through specialized breathing and blood circulation. His techniques include the Zoom Punch, which dislocates joints to extend reach, the Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, and variations that transmit energy through water, metal, and leaves. He also wields the sword Luck and Pluck in combat. After his death, his body gives rise to a plant-like Stand capable of spirit photography.
Background
Having lost his mother in an early childhood carriage accident, Jonathan grew up under his father George Joestar I. His life changed dramatically when Dio Brando was adopted into the household, engaging in a systematic attempt to break Jonathan's spirit and claim the family fortune. Years later, Jonathan uncovered Dio's plot to poison his father, leading to Dio using the Stone Mask to become a vampire. Trained in Hamon by Will Anthonio Zeppeli, Jonathan traveled alongside allies to stop Dio's growing undead army.
Relationships
Jonathan is the son of George Joestar I and the adoptive brother turned lifelong enemy of Dio Brando. He is married to Erina Pendleton, whom he befriended during his youth. He forms key bonds with his Hamon master Will Anthonio Zeppeli and his loyal companion Robert E. O. Speedwagon, whom he first met in Ogre Street. He also earns the respect of the undead knight Bruford during their duel.
Trivia
While a popular rumor claimed Jonathan's name came from the Japanese family restaurant chain Jonathan's, the series creator later clarified that initial story meetings actually took place at a Denny's. His design was influenced by the heavily muscled action protagonists popular in manga during the mid-1980s. The star-shaped birthmark on his neck was retroactively integrated into his visual design following its formal introduction in later parts of the series.
