Overview

Amagi is a character from the browser game Kantai Collection, representing the second ship of the Unryuu-class standard aircraft carriers. Built under the wartime rapid construction program, her historical namesake was unable to operate as a full aircraft carrier task force and eventually capsized after sustaining damage during the air raids on Kure. In the game, she is depicted as an elegant woman with a refined demeanor, carrying a gentle personality while serving dutifully alongside the Admiral as part of the newly reformed First Carrier Division.

Appearance

Amagi has long brown hair tied into a high, wide ponytail, with a red hair ornament shaped like a maple leaf and decorative tassels on the left side of her bangs, alongside light brown eyes and a beauty mark under her left eye. In her base form, she wears a green furisode kimono featuring camouflage patterns of pine and netting, paired with an obi patterned after a flight deck, white tabi, and high geta footwear. She carries a black cloth bag on her back and wears shield-like side rigging housing anti-aircraft guns and a bridge unit. Upon her Kai upgrade, her attire transitions to a green camouflage bikini top and short skirt, revealing her midriff, while wielding a banner-rod fitted with kagura bells in her left hand and holding her bridge unit like a firearm.

Personality

Amagi possesses a gentle, well-mannered, and cheerful disposition reminiscent of a refined young lady. She approaches her duties with sincerity, taking great pleasure in looking after the Admiral and showcasing her culinary skills with a variety of carefully prepared meals. Owing to her historical background of enduring severe air strikes, she exhibits a notable fear of aerial attacks, sometimes mistaking sudden interactions for enemy raids. Although initially hesitant about her combat capability due to her lack of operational history, she gradually gains confidence and composure as she grows more experienced.

Abilities

Classified as a standard aircraft carrier, Amagi operates with low resource consumption, though her durability and total aircraft capacity are relatively modest compared to larger carriers. Upon reaching her remodeling threshold and employing a Blueprint, she upgrades to her Kai form. In this state, she comes equipped with specialized Sixth Zero First Air Group aircraft, including the Zero Fighter Model 52C, Suisei, and Tenzan, alongside a 12cm 30-tube Rocket Launcher for anti-aircraft support.

Background

Laid down in October 1942 at the Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard and completed in August 1944, Amagi was assigned to the First Carrier Division as the second ship of the Unryuu class. Due to severe shortages of trained aviators late in the war, she was unable to conduct regular carrier fleet operations. Stationed near Mitsugojima in Kure Harbor with heavy camouflage, she was targeted during the air raids on Kure, sustaining multiple bomb strikes that ultimately led to overflooding, capsizing, and resting on the seabed before being salvaged and scrapped post-war.

Relationships

Amagi is the middle sister of the Unryuu-class aircraft carriers, maintaining close ties with her elder sister Unryuu and younger sister Katsuragi. She holds high regard for the Second Carrier Division carriers Soryu and Hiryu, referencing them with respect. Because her name was previously borne by an uncompleted Amagi-class battlecruiser intended to be the sister ship of Akagi, she is also frequently associated with Akagi in secondary works.

Trivia

Her name derives from Mount Amagi in Shizuoka Prefecture, following a revised naming convention that permitted mountain names for aircraft carriers. Designer Kuuro Kuro incorporated subtle Tengu motifs into her artwork—such as the maple leaf pin, tassels, and single-toothed geta—referencing local legends associated with Mount Amagi. Her heavily damaged pose, in which she slumps horizontally, directly references her historical capsizing in Kure Harbor.
