Overview

The Ni-Class Destroyer is a mass-produced enemy vessel belonging to the Abyssal Fleet in the naval strategy game Kantai Collection. Characterized by its flat, ray-like mechanical design and ominous glowing eye, it serves as a staple light warship opponent throughout various sea maps. Although introduced as a standard early-game enemy, its advanced variants—including the Late Model, Late Model Elite, and Kai versions—boast exceptionally high combat performance. Armed with high-angle weaponry, depth charges, and torpedoes, it poses a severe threat in both anti-submarine and night-battle engagements.

Appearance

The Ni-Class Destroyer features a distinctly flattened body design in comparison to other Abyssal destroyers. Its head has a thin, dome-shaped form reminiscent of a manta ray or mechanical sea creature, fitted with a single ominously glowing blue eye. Extending from both sides of its head are a pair of long tendrils.

Abilities

The standard Ni-Class Destroyer is equipped with 5-inch twin guns and early-model 21-inch torpedoes, which are upgraded to late-model 22-inch torpedoes in its Elite form. The Late Model variant gains a depth charge projector and possesses devastating night-battle attack power capable of heavily damaging even Yamato-class battleships in a single hit. The Late Model Elite boasts firepower (up to 68) and torpedo stats (98) that match Kai Ni Kanmusu and Abyssal Princesses, while gaining pre-emptive anti-submarine attacks. The Kai variant introduces high-angle guns and radars, significantly improving daytime shelling accuracy.

Background

The Ni-Class Destroyer was included in Kantai Collection at its official launch on April 23, 2013, serving as a primary naval adversary in early-game operation maps. It initially appeared in standard and Elite ranks without a Flagship designation. During the August 2014 Summer Event, the Late Model variant debuted, followed by the Late Model Elite in the August 2015 event "Counterattack! Second SN Operation." The Kai version was later introduced in early 2019. Throughout these event operations, multiple Ni-Class destroyers frequently deploy together as mass-produced escort units, continuously testing players' fleet preparations.

Relationships

As part of the Abyssal Fleet's light unit series, the Ni-Class Destroyer shares its operational tier with the I-Class, Ro-Class, and Ha-Class destroyers, notably sharing weapon specifications with the Ha-Class. In terms of performance evolution, its higher variants achieve stat thresholds that directly rival elite Kanmusu such as Yuudachi Kai Ni and Shimakaze, as well as the boss vessel Destroyer Princess. It was later complemented by even more formidable mass-produced destroyers like the Na-Class in subsequent event operations.

Trivia

The Ni-Class Destroyer was designed by the artist Oguchi. Its designation follows the traditional Japanese Iroha ordering system common among standard Abyssal vessels. Unlike its contemporary destroyer counterparts, the Ni-Class never received a traditional Flagship variant, instead branching directly into unique Late Model and Kai iterations over the course of the game's operational updates.
