Overview
Tamanami is a character from the browser game Kantai Collection. She is the ninth ship of the Yuugumo-class destroyers and serves as the eldest member of the 32nd Destroyer Division. Introduced during the Early Spring 2022 Event, she is depicted as a refined, mature, and dependable honor student who takes dedicated care of her fellow shipmates and commander.
Appearance
Tamanami features short grey hair with swept bangs exposing her forehead, yellow eyes, and a mole on the left side of her neck. Her standard outfit consists of a purple halterneck pleated dress worn over a white shirt, an aqua bowtie, grey pantyhose, and lace-up boots. Her rigging comprises a back-mounted funnel and foremast, a hand-held 12.7 cm twin gun mount, and two 61 cm quad torpedo tubes secured to her thighs with straps. She also has seasonal outfits for the rainy season and saury festival.
Personality
Tamanami is an earnest and gentle character who speaks with a refined, traditional tone. She maintains a calm composure with a sense of mature composure, rarely showing strong emotional outbursts. She takes great pleasure in looking after her fleetmates and commander. Possessing remarkable culinary prowess, she frequently prepares egg dishes such as dashimaki and scotch egg curry, thoughtfully catering to those around her with attentive consideration.
Abilities
Before her upgrade, Tamanami performs like a standard Yuugumo-class destroyer, though she possesses a notably low base luck stat of 8. Upon undergoing her remodeling, she gains the ability to equip Daihatsu-class landing craft (excluding Ka-Mi tanks), making her highly versatile for expedition duties, landing operations, and transport missions.
Background
Tamanami was visually teased in an official 2019 calendar before making her formal game debut in March 2022 as a drop in the winter event map. Historically assigned to the 11th Destroyer Squadron and later the 2nd Destroyer Squadron, her low in-game luck stat reflects her historical sinking near Manila Bay by the submarine USS Mingo.
Relationships
As the senior figure of the 32nd Destroyer Division, Tamanami shares warm bonds with Suzunami, Fujinami, Hayanami, and Hamanami. While she calls Suzunami by the pet name Suzu, her sisters affectionately refer to her as Tama or Ta-chan. She maintains professional and friendly ties with flagship cruisers Noshiro and Tatsuta, as well as Mogami, whom she historically escorted.
Trivia
The American submarine USS Mingo, responsible for sinking the historical Tamanami, was later transferred to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force post-war and renamed Kuroshio, sharing its name with a Kagerou-class destroyer. Additionally, the enemy entity Abyssal Jade Princess is considered to be her abyssal counterpart.
