Overview

Chiyoda is a character from Kantai Collection representing the second ship of the Chitose-class seaplane tenders, who later undergoes conversion into a light aircraft carrier. Modeled after the historic Imperial Japanese Navy warship of the same name, she is defined by her intense devotion to her elder sister, Chitose. Though initially starting as a low-combat seaplane tender, she undergoes multiple structural remodels that transform her into one of the most powerful and versatile light carriers available to players.

Appearance

Chiyoda features short brown hair and brown eyes. Her primary outfit matches her sister's, consisting of a white blouse, a short red hakama skirt, and a cropped black jacket adorned with gold phoenix motifs, accessorized with black pantyhose, a headband, and brown loafers with attached rudders. Although presenting a cute silhouette, her upgraded damaged artwork reveals a remarkably large bust. Her naval gear evolves from dual arm-mounted catapults and twin anti-aircraft mounts as a seaplane tender to a full flight deck marked with the characters 'Chito' as a light carrier. Seasonal attires include a bright red working apron for autumn and a gray rain poncho paired with a red paper umbrella.

Personality

Chiyoda is defined by an overwhelming sister complex, constantly speaking about her elder sister Chitose and fretting over her. When interacting with the Admiral, she initially treats them as a rival for her sister's affection, questioning their feelings toward Chitose. However, she harbors genuine affection for the Admiral as well, showing a tsundere demeanor by becoming delighted over late-night snacks or demanding to rest her head on the Admiral's lap. She also exhibits a playful, innocent side, particularly through her immense fondness for eating roasted sweet potatoes.

Abilities

Chiyoda begins with very limited combat stats, but possesses a unique multi-stage remodeling path spanning five total upgrades. In her 'Kou' seaplane tender configuration, she gains the ability to equip Type A Kou-hyouteki midget submarines, allowing her to deliver devastating opening torpedo attacks alongside seaplane reconnaissance. Upon converting to a light carrier, her air wing expands significantly, culminating in her 'Kai Ni' form with a capacity of 59 aircraft. In this final form, she commands high speed alongside top-tier armor, evasion, and anti-air statistics, using puppet strings attached to her equipment to control her aircraft in battle.

Background

Her historical namesake was completed in 1938 as a seaplane tender designed for midget submarine support. Following severe aircraft carrier losses at the Battle of Midway in 1942, Chiyoda underwent conversion into a light aircraft carrier at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. She later took part in major fleet engagements, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the Leyte Gulf battle in October 1944, she was immobilized by air strikes and subsequently shelled and sunk by Allied surface warships with all hands lost. In the game, this history manifests as a rewarding progression from a fragile auxiliary vessel into a frontline combat unit.

Relationships

Chiyoda shares a deeply affectionate bond with her older sister, Chitose, whom she idolizes and constantly frets over. She views herself as Chitose's ultimate companion while striving to prove her own strength alongside her. Regarding the Admiral, Chiyoda initially frames their relationship as a rivalry over Chitose's affection, but over time develops a warm, trusting connection, frequently seeking personal attention and showing subtle signs of romantic interest.

Trivia

The name 'Chiyoda' originates from Chiyoda Castle, an alternate name for Edo Castle, combining elements that signify eternal prosperity and fertile land. Due to the dramatic contrast between her early modest outfit and the impressive bust revealed in her upgraded damaged artwork, fans affectionately gave her the nickname 'Chichi-yoda.' Her historical name continues to be inherited by modern Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force submarine rescue vessels.
