Overview
Musashi is the personification of the second Yamato-class battleship in Kantai Collection. Designed by Shizuma Yoshinori and voiced by Misato, she is presented as a formidable capital ship whose design emphasizes raw strength, contrasting with the refined elegance of her sister ship Yamato. Exhibiting a commanding physical presence and a fierce, warrior-like spirit, she serves as a dependable pillar of the fleet who approaches both combat and leadership with absolute confidence.
Appearance
Musashi has dark skin, a prominent bust, and pale blonde twintails held by a hairband to resemble animal ears, with hair hanging between her eyes. She wears red-framed glasses patterned after the Type 21 anti-aircraft radar mesh over her sharp reddish eyes, a bow-shaped metal collar around her neck, and black fingernails. Her clothing features tightly wrapped white bandages around her torso, a black short capelet with a red sailor collar, a red pleated skirt, black thighhighs, and grey rudder-like footwear. Upon Kai remodeling, her outfit shifts to a black color scheme. Her rigging incorporates hull sections connected via a funnel, a rangefinder headpiece, thigh straps with armor-piercing shells, and three 46cm triple gun mounts, with the third turret attached to a waist rail joint allowing forward movement.
Personality
Musashi possesses a bold, warrior-like demeanor and a highly competitive nature in battle. She relishes fully unleashing her heavy firepower and remains entirely undaunted even when sustaining heavy damage. Beneath her fierce and dependable big-sister exterior lies a warm, considerate companion who treats the Admiral as an equal partner. Despite her imposing reputation, she harbors a softer, affectionate side, displaying endearing bashfulness when teased and showing a strong weakness for local culinary specialties originating from Nagasaki, such as castella, sara udon, and oversized hamburgers.
Abilities
Musashi possesses top-tier durability, firepower, and armor within the fleet. Compared to Yamato, she features slightly higher initial durability and reconnaissance stats, becoming eligible for her Kai remodeling at level 40. Her rigging features an upgraded mechanism where the third main gun mount is attached to a waist rail joint, allowing it to slide along the rail to fire toward the front. However, her maintenance and repair costs require enormous amounts of resources, and her luck stat drops slightly upon remodeling.
Background
Musashi was first introduced as an event reward in late 2013 before being added to Large Scale Construction. Her historical namesake was constructed at the Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard as the second Yamato-class battleship. Although historically deprived of major surface engagements, she endured an overwhelming concentrated assault of torpedoes and bombs during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, staying afloat for nine hours. The silver-grey paint applied to her hull prior to her final sortie was rumored by her crew as a death shroud, a historical detail reflected in her Kai appearance. In March 2015, her underwater wreck was officially located in the Sibuyan Sea.
Relationships
Musashi maintains a close bond with her elder sister, Yamato, often showing concern for her soft-spoken nature while demonstrating their contrasting temperaments of grace and power. Historical events tie her closely to Maya and Shimakaze, prompting Musashi to look after Maya while Shimakaze expresses concern for her well-being. She also shares a deep mutual respect with Tone from their shared combat experiences in escort missions, and holds a special connection with the escort carrier Otaka (Kasugamaru), who witnessed her historical launch.
Trivia
During her historical launch, the displaced water created a large wave that flooded nearby residential homes. Because her interior featured traditional Japanese-style decorations compared to Yamato's Western decor, officers affectionately referred to her as the "Musashi Palace" or "Musashi Inn." In the game, she shares her voice actress with the submarine I-19.
