Overview

Arare is a ship girl from the browser game Kantai Collection, representing the ninth vessel of the Asashio-class destroyers. Assigned to the 18th Destroyer Division, she is characterized by her quiet demeanor and understated, mysterious presence. In combat situations, she expresses a clear preference for torpedo battles over artillery duels. Although present in the game since its early launch period, she spent a substantial amount of time without visual updates before eventually receiving her second-remodel form and seasonal variants.

Appearance

Arare has short black hair and brown eyes. Her attire consists of a short-sleeved white shirt worn beneath a suspender skirt, topped with a hat identical to the one worn by Ooshio. She wears black knee-high socks alongside footwear designed with grey and red colors featuring a ship rudder. Her naval rigging includes a structure resembling a ship's bridge and foremast mounted on her back, while she holds a 12.7 cm twin gun mount and 61 cm quad torpedo tubes.

Personality

Arare possesses a tranquil and subtly enigmatic personality, speaking in a soft and calm tone. Despite explicitly denying the use of a certain famous greeting phrase during her initial introduction, she inadvertently slips and utters it when undergoing ship modernization. She exhibits a modest and reserved reaction when earning high battle distinctions, appearing bewildered by praise. Around her fleet sisters, particularly Kasumi, she demonstrates a dutiful and fond attitude, addressing her respectfully as an elder sister.

Abilities

As a destroyer, Arare operates effectively within torpedo squadrons, emphasizing torpedo tactics over gunfire engagements during surface battles. She engages targets using her 12.7 cm twin gun mount and 61 cm quad torpedo tubes. Upon reaching her Kai Ni form, her overall battle capabilities are substantially upgraded, reflecting her operational performance in northern transport missions as part of the Fifth Fleet.

Background

Arare was introduced during the early stages of Kantai Collection as part of the Asashio class. For over four years, she remained the only initial Asashio-class member without a second remodel or alternative visual mode. Her long-awaited update cycle began in late 2017 with a Christmas seasonal graphic, followed shortly by her official Kai Ni upgrade on April 6, 2018. Additionally, during a real-world commemorative event held in Maizuru in autumn 2023, she received a casual outfit graphic celebrating her homecoming.

Relationships

Arare maintains close ties with her sister ships of the Asashio class. She treats Kasumi with great reverence, calling her "Kasumi-neesan" and effectively acting as the younger sister among the pair. Within the 18th Destroyer Division, she operates alongside Kasumi, Kagerou, and Shiranui. During the Maizuru event, she was featured alongside other destroyers such as Fubuki, Hatsuyuki, Shikinami, and Sazanami in casual seasonal attire.

Trivia

Her self-introduction line denying the use of "Ncha" is a pop-culture reference to Arale Norimaki, the protagonist of Dr. Slump. Her reaction line upon earning the MVP award plays on the Japanese idiom "hakushu kassai ame arare" (applause raining down like hail). Although the game's library indexes her as the ninth Asashio-class ship ahead of Kasumi, historical construction plans originally listed Kasumi as the ninth and Arare as the tenth, with the game adopting order based on completion dates.
