Overview

Kumano is a shipgirl from Kantai Collection based on the fourth vessel of the Mogami-class heavy cruisers. Styling herself as a refined lady born in Kobe, she presents an elegant ojou-sama persona with polite speech. In gameplay, she debuts as a heavy cruiser and can later be converted via upgrades into an aviation cruiser capable of deploying seaplanes, or even into an attack light aircraft carrier.

Appearance

She has long chestnut-brown hair styled in a ponytail and green eyes. Unlike the earlier Mogami-class sisters, her outfit consists of a brown blazer over a white shirt, paired with a pleated brown skirt and matching brown thigh-high socks. Her rigging is equipped with main and secondary gun mounts, which incorporates an inset flight deck attached to her left arm in her upgraded form.

Personality

She acts like a haughty, high-class young lady with an extremely strong focus on personal beauty and skincare. Although she views fatigue and staying up late as threats to her complexion, she displays a surprising contrast in combat by letting out loud, high-pitched battle cries. Despite her sophisticated facade, she possesses a slightly airheaded, comical side and maintains a haughty yet attentive attitude toward the commander.

Abilities

She possesses formidable night-battle performance and firepower as a heavy cruiser. Upgrading her to an aviation cruiser allows her to operate seaplane bombers, granting her anti-submarine capabilities and participation in aerial combat. In her light aircraft carrier form, she functions as an attack-oriented carrier that prioritizes engaging surface vessels over submarines when facing mixed enemy fleets.

Background

Constructed at the Kawasaki Shipyard in Kobe during the 1930s, the historic warship participated in major Pacific naval battles. Despite suffering catastrophic damage in repeated encounters, she endured extensive attempts to return home before finally sinking. In the game, she was introduced in early event operations and remains obtainable via construction and drops across several map areas.

Relationships

She shares a particularly close bond with her sister ship Suzuya, with whom she is frequently paired in official stories and secondary works. As a vessel born at the Kawasaki Shipyard in Kobe, she shares regional roots with Maya, Ashigara, and Kinugasa. She occasionally expresses exasperation toward Sendai due to the latter's obsession with night battles.

Trivia

Her uniform design reflects the structural design changes made during her historical construction compared to the first two Mogami-class ships. In spin-off media, she is often humorously portrayed as having a terrible sense of direction, getting stranded in bad weather until rescued. Her name has been passed down to multiple modern Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force escort vessels.
