Overview
The Floating Fortress is an Abyssal ship enemy appearing in the web browser game Kantai Collection. Classified under the unique ship type code "Fu", it primarily serves as a supporting escort unit for powerful boss-class Abyssal entities, such as Demons and Princesses, absorbing damage and providing offensive fire support.
Appearance
It has a whitish, spherical body with a large, open mouth displaying exposed teeth through its center, from which a hazy breath emerges. Visually, it is virtually identical to its higher-ranked counterpart, the Escort Fortress.
Abilities
Despite its basic spherical design, it possesses combat capabilities comparable to those of a heavy cruiser. It can operate carrier aircraft to execute preemptive strikes, and carrying fighter planes allows it to challenge players for air superiority. During engagements, it frequently acts as a shield to intercept incoming attacks aimed at boss units.
Background
Since the early stages of Kantai Collection, the Floating Fortress has been deployed as an escort enemy in various combat maps. Over time, as players' fleet capabilities evolved alongside the introduction of stronger Abyssal units, its role shifted primarily to absorbing damage. In September 2017, a display glitch caused by uncleared cache data on the Android version caused its identification code to mix with Saratoga Mk-II, briefly causing players to accidentally trigger marriage ceremony screens with the Floating Fortress.
Relationships
It frequently accompanies high-tier Abyssal units, including Demon and Princess class boss entities, acting as their escort. It also shares its visual model and general behavior with a higher-stat variant known as the Escort Fortress.
Trivia
Its ship type code "Fu" has no direct counterpart among player ships. Rather than representing a specific historic vessel, it is believed to be modeled after floating batteries or armed barges used for harbor defense in military history. In fan works, it is often depicted alongside larger fortress-type Abyssals like a pet.
