Overview
Makigumo is a shipgirl in Kantai Collection, based on the second ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Yuugumo-class destroyers. Serving in the 10th Destroyer Division, she is recognized by her prominent glasses and charming demeanor. She combines a clumsy, youthful nature with intense devotion to her elder sister Yuugumo and steadfast loyalty to the player commander.
Appearance
She has long pink hair styled in double buns and twintails with an ahoge, alongside yellow eyes behind large round glasses. Her default attire is a purple halterneck jumper skirt worn over a white long-sleeved shirt with a blue bowtie, paired with grey pantyhose and lace-up boots. Her shirt sleeves are oversized, extending past her wrists to completely cover her hands. A small pink rabbit accompanies her. Her back rigging consists of a funnel decorated with a rabbit emblem and a foremast. She carries a 12.7 cm twin gun mount and wears two 61 cm quad torpedo launchers on thigh straps. In her swimsuit attire, she wears a white shirt printed with a rabbit graphic tied on the left over a one-piece swimsuit, paired with sandals while holding a rabbit-patterned beach ball in her right hand.
Personality
Makigumo is a childish and clumsy girl who easily panics when things go awry. She addresses the commander with polite respect and strives to be helpful, often staring intently through the screen when left waiting. She is intensely attached to her older sister Yuugumo, demonstrating strong sisterly affection and insisting that only Yuugumo is allowed to touch her.
Abilities
Upon reaching her initial remodel at level 30, she provides the rare Type 3 SONAR equipment, specializing in anti-submarine capabilities. In combat, she utilizes her 12.7 cm twin gun mount alongside two 61 cm quad torpedo launchers mounted on her thighs. Through further experience, she can be upgraded to her secondary remodel, Kai Ni.
Background
Makigumo was introduced to the game in October 2013 alongside Naganami. Historically a member of the 10th Destroyer Division, she participated in operations around Midway and the Solomon Islands. During the disposal of the heavily damaged American carrier Hornet, she faced a overwhelming challenge owing to the massive size difference between the vessels, an event that led to ongoing teasing from Akigumo. Her second upgrade form, Kai Ni, was implemented in November 2018.
Relationships
She adores her older sister Yuugumo and exhibits deep affection toward her. She shares a banter-filled relationship with her 10th Destroyer Division squadmate Akigumo, who regularly teases her about past operation mishaps. She also retains memorable friction regarding the aircraft carrier Hornet, whom she was tasked to scuttling. She is frequently paired with her fellow glasses-wearing classmate Okinami, and holds a unique connection to her sister ship Makinami due to persistent name mix-ups in media prior to Makinami's official release.
Trivia
Despite her youthful appearance and loose clothing giving the impression of low height, official group artwork confirmed that she is actually taller than several of her class sisters, including Kiyoshimo and Hayashimo. Due to the high similarity of her name to her sister ship Makinami, her name was frequently misspelled as Makinami in spin-off media and light novels long before Makinami joined the game.
