Overview

Graf Zeppelin is an aircraft carrier ship girl from Kantai Collection, based on the real-world unfinished German aircraft carrier of the same name. Introduced as the first uncompleted ship and the first foreign fleet carrier in the game, she functions as the lead ship of her class. She carries herself with a cool, stoic demeanor like a seasoned warrior, yet maintains a dedicated and affectionate attitude toward the Admiral. Due to historical design connections with Japan, she shows strong curiosity about Japanese culture.

Appearance

She has notably pale skin, sleek gray eyes with a sharp downcast glare, and long blonde hair styled in twintails with a front lock hanging down to her chest. Her uniform is predominantly white, featuring a white capelet decorated with a Celtic knot pattern and an anchor fastener. She wears a black tie with a central red line and a Balkenkreuz, a jacket with red-and-white sleeves, black hip pouches, a black pleated miniskirt, black pantyhose, and shoes modeled after ship hulls with Schneider propellers at the heels. Her U-shaped rigging wraps around her torso, featuring anti-aircraft guns and a flight deck bearing a Balkenkreuz attached via a mechanical arm. She holds a gun-shaped rig housing twin 15cm guns and fire control equipment. Her Kai form adds black and gray Baltic scheme lines to her hat, capelet, and rigging.

Personality

Reflecting her reputation as an "iron woman," she is serious, composed, and acts with the calm authority of a seasoned veteran despite having never seen combat in history. Beneath her disciplined exterior, she is surprisingly open-minded, inquisitive, and deeply particular about how she prepares her coffee. She exhibits a warm and attentive demeanor toward the Admiral, often showing a flustered, charming side when attempting to cover up her affectionate comments.

Abilities

Though categorized as a fleet carrier, her total aircraft capacity is relatively low at 56 planes in her Kai form, but her large first slot allows for highly potent single-strike air attacks. She features a natural medium attack range and stats skewed toward heavy offense and defense. Uniquely among most carriers, she can participate in night battles without specialized gear, executing shellings via her handheld gun rig even while moderately damaged. Her aircraft are stored as metal etching cards in her waist pouches and summoned by inserting them into a card slot beneath her flight deck's elevator.

Background

She debuted as an event-exclusive drop before later becoming craftable via Large Ship Construction. Historically, she was launched by the German Navy but never completed. Her introduction marked a milestone in Kantai Collection as the very first uncompleted warship—and the first foreign fleet aircraft carrier—to be personified as a ship girl, paving the way for other unfinished historical vessels to follow.

Relationships

She holds deep respect and affection for the Admiral, constantly offering practical support around the naval base. Due to historical naval ties—such as Japan sharing blueprints from the aircraft carrier Akagi to aid her design—she feels a strong affinity for Japan and its cultural traditions. She also maintains close ties with her fellow fleet aircraft carriers.

Trivia

According to character designer Shimada Fumikane, her visual design was inspired by Druidic imagery to contrast with the Onmyodo-themed designs of Japanese aircraft carriers. Her light gray color scheme was inspired by the camouflage paint used on the battleship Tirpitz around 1942–1943. While her flight deck is held high in her standard art, it drops beside her shoulder when damaged, altering her silhouette to resemble that of traditional Japanese carriers.
