Overview

Helena is a ship girl in Kantai Collection based on the second St. Louis-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. Introduced during the "Prevent the Invasion! Ridge Defense Reinforcement Operation" event, she is the first pure American light cruiser added to the game. Combining a polite, refined high-society demeanor with extraordinary offensive capability, she occupies a unique, high-firepower combat role among light cruisers within the fleet.

Appearance

Helena has waist-length brown hair with straight-cut bangs and curled ends, paired with yellowish-green eyes. She wears a headpiece resembling a communicator headband, a white military uniform with black and orange trimmed cuffs and collar, a neck ribbon styled after the American flag with a star pin, a grey breastplate, a black slit skirt, grey thigh-high socks, and specialized boots. Her rigging features 6-inch triple gun turrets, anti-aircraft guns, and autonomous 5-inch twin gun mounts, adorned with hull number "50". In her Kai form, the breastplate is removed, her ribbon and sock designs change, and her rigging turns navy blue.

Personality

Helena generally carries a cheerful, polite, and well-mannered demeanor, though her emotions can occasionally flare up in lively ways. She remains pragmatic about past conflicts, preferring to build friendly bonds with former adversaries as current allies. Naturally attentive and caring, she often worries about the well-being of others and takes on a stressed, caretaker-like role when dealing with flawed paperwork or antics from fellow fleet members.

Abilities

Helena possesses unmatched base firepower among light cruisers, enabling her to deal damage on par with heavy cruisers during daytime shelling. She also features high armor durability. Utilizing four equipment slots, she excels in anti-ground double attacks and can dual-role as an anti-air defender and secondary attacker using high-performance radar and dual-purpose guns. However, her torpedo capability, anti-submarine stats, and evasion capabilities are noticeably low.

Background

Helena carries the legacy of her historical namesake's participation in intense Pacific engagements such as the Battle of Cape Esperance and the Battle of Kula Gulf. Introduced as an event drop ship, she integrates into the base operations by serving meals to the Admiral and assisting with administrative duty while maintaining friendly relations with ships she historically fought against.

Relationships

Helena frequently deals with administrative mistakes made by Atlanta and South Dakota, whereas she shows a much gentler indulgence toward Fletcher. She displays strong concern for Wasp's safety, interacts amicably with I-19 despite historical tensions, and chats casually with Kinugasa about their past combat engagements. She also shares historical ties with Aoba from the Battle of Cape Esperance.

Trivia

In historical lore, Helena initiated firing during the Battle of Cape Esperance due to a command miscommunication, resulting in heavy damage to Aoba and the sinking of other ships. Due to her overwhelming daytime shelling power, she earned a popular fan nickname highlighting her brute strength, a theme occasionally referenced in seasonal artwork and official media.
