A round strawberry-patterned badge is attached near her waist, and a tiny pink rabbit accompanies her. When heavily damaged, her uniform tears significantly to reveal strawberry-print underwear. Despite addressing the Admiral as "Master," Sazanami's speech pattern is heavily peppered with modern internet slang and pop-culture catchphrases. She possesses a cheeky, eccentric demeanor and does not hesitate to threaten physical retaliation against overstepping Admirals. Beneath her bizarre exterior, however, she is deeply earnest, reliable in battle, and secretly shy, using her strange antics to mask her true desire to converse sincerely with the Admiral.

Sazanami maintains close relations with her fellow 7th Destroyer Division mates: Akebono, Ushio, and Oboro. The badge Sazanami wears on her waist is believed to reference historical testing of new boilers conducted on her class before the official Akatsuki-class designation. December 24 holds historical significance for her unit due to the loss of her companion ship Sagiri in 1941. She is frequently depicted with birthday or Christmas cakes in seasonal art, and famously inspired community memes after an official news post accidentally labeled her rainy season outfit as "Fuso Mode."
