Overview
Takanami is a fleet girl from Kantai Collection representing the sixth ship of the Yuugumo-class destroyers. Introduced during the Spring 2015 event Order No. 11 Operation, she embodies a timid and small-animal-like demeanor, contrasting with her historical real-world counterpart's pivotal and courageous role in the Battle of Lunga Point.
Appearance
Takanami has short green hair styled in a bob cut with braided long sidelocks, alongside brown eyes. She wears a white shirt beneath a purple halterneck pleated dress, accented with a blue bowtie, gray pantyhose, lace-up boots, and a yellow sports bra underneath. Her naval rigging features a back-mounted funnel and foremast with a 25 mm anti-aircraft gun, paired with a handheld 12.7 cm twin gun mount and two 61 cm quad torpedo tubes strapped to her thighs. She also receives seasonal variants including rainy season outfits, Valentine's clothing, swimsuits, and Kai Ni seasonal variants.
Personality
Takanami possesses a shy, soft-spoken, and easily startled disposition that gives her a small-animal quality. She is characterized by her signature verbal tic of frequently ending statements with "kamo" or "kamo-desu." Despite her fragile front and hesitation regarding memories of night battles, she exhibits remarkable bravery when entering combat, refusing to step back from an assault.
Abilities
Her baseline capabilities align with other Yuugumo-class destroyers, though her initial luck stat is slightly lower. Upon remodeling, her scouting stat surpasses that of her sister ships slightly, reflecting her historical role as a vanguard reconnaissance vessel. Upgrading her yields equipment including two radar items and a Skilled Lookouts item.
Background
Debuting in the Spring 2015 event Order No. 11 Operation, Takanami was later made available in standard sea areas. During the Clash! Battle of Lunga Point event, her Kai Ni form was officially added. Historically belonging to the 31st Destroyer Division, she served as a flagship scout in the Battle of Lunga Point, taking the brunt of enemy fire while enabling her fleet to secure a decisive night tactical victory.
Relationships
She holds deep admiration for Naganami, her senior officer and flagship in the 31st Destroyer Division during the Battle of Lunga Point. She shows a domestic side by cooking Frikadeller beef, a dish shared with Taigei. Due to launching in the same update and sharing a similar sentence-ending habit, she is frequently paired by fans with the seaplane tender Akitsushima.
Trivia
Her persistent speech habit "kamo" shares a homophone with the Japanese word for duck, inspiring a comedic fan concept known as the "Kamo-kamo Religion" alongside Akitsushima. The historical name Takanami was later inherited by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels, including an Ayanami-class destroyer and the lead ship of the Takanami-class destroyers.
