Overview

I-58 is a submarine Fleet Girl from Kantai Collection, based on the historical Imperial Japanese Navy submarine of the same name. Belonging to the Type B Modified 2 (I-54 class), she colloquially refers to herself by the nickname Goya. Characterized by her cheerful, lively, and childlike demeanor, she serves as a dependable member of the Admiral's fleet, widely relied upon by players for efficient maritime operations and specialized night-battle torpedo combat.

Appearance

She has short pink hair topped with a C-shaped ahoge pointing forward, alongside a hair ornament featuring two white stripes and a cherry blossom motif. Her eyes are pink or red. Her costume consists of a white and blue sailor uniform top worn directly over a navy school swimsuit without a skirt, leaving her barefoot. She holds Type 95 oxygen torpedoes in her arms, sits on a structure resembling a submarine bridge, and wears torpedo launch tubes on her back. Her portrait shows a slightly rounded stomach profile.

Personality

Friendly, energetic, and sweet, I-58 is deeply attached to the Admiral and readily feels lonely when ignored. While she thoroughly enjoys being in the ocean and diving underwater, she harbors a strong dread of darkness, ghosts, and the nighttime. She habitually appends a distinct verbal quirk to the ends of her sentences. Confident in the effectiveness of her conventional torpedoes, she demonstrates a severe dislike and strong refusal toward equipped suicide weapons such as the Kaiten manned torpedoes.

Abilities

Initially operating as a submarine, I-58 can be modernized into a submarine aircraft carrier. She possesses an exceptionally high Luck attribute, enabling her to land devastating torpedo cut-in strikes during night battles when fitted with multiple torpedoes. Upon upgrading to a submarine aircraft carrier, she gains the ability to equip seaplanes such as water bombers and fighters. This allows her to assist fleet operations by securing air superiority and enabling artillery spotting for allied surface units while maintaining minimal fuel and ammunition consumption.

Background

Her historical basis is the Imperial Japanese Navy Type B Modified 2 submarine I-58, launched in 1943 and commissioned in 1944. In July 1945 during the final phase of World War II, she achieved historical prominence by torpedoing and sinking the United States Navy heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis. Having survived the war to return safely to Kure, she was scuttled by American forces off the Gotō Islands in April 1946. In 2017, an underwater investigation located her wreck resting embedded bow-first in the seabed.

Relationships

She is deeply devoted to the Admiral, happily wearing the school swimsuit designated by him and seeking his affection. She shares a close friendship and a matching uniform style—a sailor shirt over a school swimsuit—with fellow submarine I-168. She also maintains an active dynamic with the German submarine Ro-500 (formerly U-511), who addresses her by a nickname derived from apprentice labor; though I-58 expresses frustration over the title, the two remain close partners.

Trivia

Though her nickname "Goya" shares its name with the Japanese term for bitter gourd, she insists that her personality is sweet rather than bitter. Because of her low resource deployment cost and high luck, players heavily utilized her for repeated resource-farming sorties in Map 2-3 (the Orel Sea), earning her a widespread reputation in the community as an overworked fleet worker.
