Overview

Shiranui is a ship girl representing the second vessel of the Kagerou-class destroyers in the browser game Kantai Collection. Standing out among the typically youthful destroyer roster, she projects a calm, composed, and mature demeanor. Available to players from the early stages of the game, she plays an active role in clearing routine quests, gathering resources, and supporting fleet operations. Her contrast between a reserved, businesslike attitude during daily duties and a ruthless, combat-hungry personality in battle makes her a distinctive presence within the fleet.

Appearance

Shiranui has pink, medium-length hair gathered into a ponytail with a hair tie featuring a light blue plastic ribbon ornament, paired with sky-blue eyes. Designed by Konishi, her outfit follows the Kagerou-class standard comprising a short-sleeved white shirt, black vest, black pleated skirt, white gloves, white thigh-high socks, and brown loafers. Distinct from her elder sister Kagerou, her chest tie is a red cord ribbon, she wears bicycle shorts under her skirt, and her shoulder-mounted twin gun mount lacks a visible grip. She also possesses a seasonal autumn casual wear design.

Personality

Shiranui maintains a quiet, low-toned, and strictly professional disposition, taking her duties with extreme seriousness and absolute loyalty to the Admiral. Her sharp questioning whenever interactively addressed has earned her a reputation for possessing an intimidating, battleship-level gaze. In combat, however, her calm facade vanishes, replaced by a ruthless fighter who relentlessly pursues enemies and wears a defiant smile even when heavily damaged. Despite her formidable demeanor, she occasionally slips up, such as getting tongue-tied when announcing fleet sorties.

Abilities

Belonging to the Kagerou class, she possesses higher baseline attributes compared to many standard destroyers obtainable early in the game. This renders her highly effective for early-game combat sorties and resource-gathering runs. Through battle experience, she can be upgraded first to her Kai form and subsequently to her Kai Ni form. These upgrades substantially elevate her combat statistics, allowing her to function as a reliable front-line destroyer in high-difficulty operations.

Background

Shiranui has been available since the early days of Kantai Collection as an accessible destroyer obtained via construction or map drops. Alongside her sisters Kagerou and Kuroshio, she serves as an early mainstay for players and is required for specific fleet composition and sortie quests. In May 2018, she received her Kai Ni second remodel following official teasers referencing historic North Pacific and Leyte operations. In various spin-off media, her tragic wartime history is reflected in her stoic nature and interactions with fellow fleet members.

Relationships

As the second ship of her class, Shiranui is the younger sister of Kagerou and an elder sister to Kuroshio and others. She forms the 18th Destroyer Division alongside Kagerou, Kasumi, and Arare. Though she maintains a cool demeanor, she shares a strong bond with her squad members. In cross-media adaptations, she interacts with light cruiser Kinu and destroyer Fubuki. Toward the Admiral, she maintains a strictly formal and unwaveringly loyal relationship.

Trivia

On October 12, 2017, when a teaser for her autumn outfit was revealed by the game developers, it coincidentally coincided with the launch date of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Asahi-class destroyer JS Shiranui. Her memorable line questioning whether she has committed any error or flaw gave rise to one of her most enduring fan nicknames, while her tongue-tied sortie line remains a popular subject in fan works.
