Umikaze
Umikaze is a shipgirl from Kantai Collection, serving as the seventh ship of the Shiratsuyu-class destroyers and the lead ship of the subclass known as the Kai-Shiratsuyu class. Designed by Kujou Ichiso and voiced by Shizuka Ishigami, she was introduced alongside her sister ship Kawakaze during the Summer 2015 event. Distinct in visual design and equipment from the earlier Shiratsuyu-class vessels, she holds great pride in her designation as the lead vessel of the refined Kai-Shiratsuyu subclass.
Overview
Appearance
She features long silver hair that transitions from a pinkish hue at the top to a dark sky blue toward the end, gathered into a single long braid secured with a green bead. She has asymmetric front hair, a long left sideburn, side hair flaps, blue-green drooping eyes, and a mole under her left eye. Her attire consists of a grey and black sleeveless serafuku with blue accents, a blue neckerchief, detached white sleeves, long black gloves, and thigh-high socks, marked with the Greek letter chi (χ) on her clothing and shoes. Her naval rigging includes a chimney base with radar, anti-aircraft guns, and a torpedo launcher mounted on a metal belt around her left thigh.
Personality
Umikaze is modest, reserved, and notably caring. She frequently starts her responses with a brief hesitation. Highly conscientious in her duty as a secretary ship, she interacts with the Admiral in a respectful, devoted manner. She takes subtle pride in belonging to the upgraded subclass, often emphasizing her identity as its lead ship. She also enjoys tea—particularly green tea—and takes pleasure in serving it to others.
Abilities
Upon joined fleet operations, she brings specialized armament including the 12.7cm Twin Gun Mount Model B Kai 2 and a Type 94 Depth Charge Launcher. Notably, she yields access to the high-performance small-caliber main battery at the relatively low level threshold of 30.
Background
Debuting as a limited drop ship in the Summer 2015 event, Umikaze was initially obtainable only during special operations. She was later permanently added to high-difficulty regular map encounters such as World 6-5 and World 7-3. Recognized for her rarity among destroyers, she received her second-tier upgrade, Kai Ni, in an update released on June 25, 2019.
Relationships
She exhibits an affectionate and protective attitude toward her younger sister Kawakaze, constantly looking after her well-being. She is similarly beloved by Yamakaze for her gentle demeanor. Within the 24th Destroyer Division, she offers warm encouragement to Suzukaze and acts cordially toward other destroyers such as Michishio.
Trivia
According to character designer Kujou Ichiso, the Greek letter chi (χ) is incorporated into her costume and footwear to signify her status as part of the Kai-Shiratsuyu class. Her promotional illustrations for corporate collaborations—such as her Lawson uniform variant and Mitsukoshi casual outfit—were later adapted into official in-game seasonal graphics.
