Overview

Maya is a shipgirl from the browser game Kantai Collection, representing the third vessel of the Takao-class heavy cruisers. Characterized by her tomboyish demeanor and rough speech, she delivers her thoughts directly and without pretense. In gameplay, she shines as an anti-aircraft specialist, while demonstrating a surprisingly considerate nature toward her fleetmates and the Admiral.

Appearance

Maya features short brown hair with an X-shaped hairclip, blue eyes, and headgear modeled after ship masts. She wears a blue sleeveless sailor suit exposing her collarbone, a white pleated skirt with a waist belt, and black gloves. Her boots bear an anchor-like design on her left leg, and the uniform fabric is noted to share material with modern swimwear. Upon her Kai Ni upgrade, her outfit changes to expose her midriff, accompanied by a small hat with a red ribbon and rigging heavily fitted with anti-aircraft weaponry and radar detectors.

Personality

Despite her rough and masculine speech pattern, Maya has an exceedingly frank and open-hearted personality. She speaks her mind directly without malice, demonstrating deep care for her comrades by worrying about the fleet even when wounded. Beneath her brash exterior lies an honest girl who readily expresses gratitude for support. She enjoys lighthearted pranks, such as swapping hair accessories while others bathe. During seasonal events, she shows a shy side when offering sweets, despite secretly disliking sugary foods herself.

Abilities

From the outset, Maya offers solid firepower and becomes available for early upgrades due to a low required level. Her primary strength lies in her rapidly escalating anti-air stat upon line refits, earning her recognition as a dedicated anti-air cruiser. In her Kai Ni form, she comes equipped with specialized high-angle mounts and air radar, facilitating exceptionally high trigger rates for anti-air cut-in attacks. Her armor is also supplemented with bulge modernizations.

Background

Joining the fleet as the third Takao-class cruiser, Maya functions as a key component of the naval base's air defenses. Her background incorporates historical references, such as having kept a small monkey on board prior to the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and being sunk by a submarine ambush preceding the Battle of Leyte Gulf. This history manifests in her reluctance and defensive hostility toward enemy and allied submarines.

Relationships

Maya is the younger sister of Takao and Atago within the Takao-class heavy cruisers. Having shared the exact same completion date as her sister Choukai, the two maintain a twin-like dynamic despite their contrasting personalities. Conversely, due to her tragic encounter with enemy submersibles, she harbors an intense aversion toward submarine shipgirls such as I-168 and I-58, often glaring at them with visible irritation.

Trivia

Her name primarily originates from Mount Maya in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, though alternative theories suggest Mount Maya in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. The name is also shared with Māyā, the mother of the historical Buddha. Due to her exceptional specialization in modern anti-aircraft warfare, she is affectionately nicknamed 'Anti-Air Bancho' among players.
