Overview
Okinami is a fleet girl in the browser game Kantai Collection, based on the historical Japanese Yuugumo-class destroyer of the same name. Identified by her distinct blue-framed glasses and two-toned hair, she stands out as one of the few megane (glasses-wearing) destroyers in the fleet. Introduced in early 2016 during the Winter Event, she was later added to standard maps and can eventually be upgraded to Kai Ni form, specializing in anti-submarine capabilities.
Appearance
Okinami features short hair overall with longer side locks reaching her shoulders. Her hair has a two-tone color scheme: a deep reddish-brown or black outer layer paired with a pink inner layer. A hairpin shaped like a ship's galley funnel holds the right side of her hair. She wears blue half-rimmed glasses over green eyes. Her outfit consists of the standard Yuugumo-class uniform—a white shirt under a purple halterneck pleated dress, a blue bowtie, grey tights, and lace-up boots. Her ship rigging includes a back-mounted funnel and mast, alongside torpedo tubes strapped to her thighs. She also has seasonal artwork featuring swimwear and casual saury festival attire.
Personality
Despite her strict, student-council-president appearance, Okinami has a quiet, gentle, and polite demeanor akin to a library committee member. She possesses a slightly airheaded side, often panicking about losing her glasses while actively wearing them. Her fixation on her eyewear is a defining trait; even when suffering combat damage, her immediate concern is ensuring her glasses remain undamaged. She exhibits a polite, respectful attitude toward the Admiral.
Abilities
Okinami carries standard Yuugumo-class armaments, including twin gun mounts and quad torpedo tubes. Upon undergoing Kai upgrade, her anti-submarine warfare (ASW) stat grows exceptionally high, reflecting her historical combat history against submarines. With her Kai Ni form, she further enhances her fleet support capabilities and battle stats.
Background
First appearing as an event-exclusive drop during the February 2016 Operation Rei-Gou event, Okinami was permanently added to standard map drops later that year. In March 2020, tied to the Hinamatsuri-themed event, she received her Kai Ni remodeling.
Relationships
She shares close bonds with her 31st Destroyer Division sisters, affectionately addressing Naganami as 'Naganami-neesan', Kishinami as 'Kishi-chan', and Asashimo as 'Asa-chan'. Fujinami warmly calls her 'Oki-chan'. She also maintains historic ties to vessels involved in the Manila Bay air raids, such as Akishimo, Hatsuharu, Kiso, and Akebono. Within the Yuugumo class, she shares the distinction of wearing glasses with Makinami.
Trivia
Due to her prioritizing the safety of her glasses over her physical condition when damaged, fans frequently joke that her glasses are her true 'main body.' Her neat, receptionist-like appearance has also earned her affectionate comparisons to Ooyodo among fans.
