Choukai

Choukai is a shipgirl from the web browser game Kantai Collection, based on the fourth vessel of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Takao-class heavy cruisers. Standing alongside her sister ships Takao, Atago, and Maya, she is portrayed as a polite, serious, and highly intellectual honor student whose composed demeanor contrasts with her revealing outfit. Distinct from her sisters, she is the sole member of her class who addresses the player as Commander rather than Admiral. Reflecting her extensive operational history in major Pacific engagements, she is depicted in game as a capable tactical thinker possessing high combat performance in both daytime and night battles.

Overview

Appearance

Choukai features long black hair, red eyes, and rimless glasses, along with antenna-like mast ornaments on her head. She wears a navy-style outfit made of material akin to school swimsuits, consisting of a short blue sleeveless shirt that leaves her midriff exposed, a white pleated skirt, a loose waist belt, and black gloves. Her armaments include 20.3cm twin guns mounted on both arms, high-angle guns on her shoulders, and a boot-like fitting on her right leg. In her Kai Ni form, her gear and hat switch to the right side—mirroring Maya's design—and feature searchlights on her masts.

Personality

Choukai is characterized by her soft-spoken, highly serious, and analytical demeanor, taking pride in calculated decision-making during battle. Unlike many of her peers, she remains humble in victory, constantly crediting the Commander's tactical direction for her successes. Despite wearing a surprisingly revealing outfit, she possesses a pure and innocent nature, often naively assuming physical interactions from the Commander are part of an assigned duty. Voice lines during seasonal events also reveal a subtle concern for her physical body shape and meticulous attention to detail.

Abilities

As a medium-range heavy cruiser, Choukai features high offensive stats combining gunfire and torpedo capabilities. She undergoes her first remodel at level 25 and her second remodel (Kai Ni) at level 65, which requires a Second Remodel Blueprint. Upon reaching her Kai Ni form, she gains exceptional daytime and night battle firepower among heavy cruisers. Her upgraded equipment loadout includes 20.3cm Twin Gun Mounts (No.2), Skilled Lookouts, a Searchlight, and a Type 22 Surface Radar Kai 4.

Background

Choukai is derived from the real-world Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser of the same name, completed on June 30, 1932, sharing her completion day with Maya. During World War II, she served as the flagship of the Eighth Fleet, gaining historical renown for leading a surprise night assault during the naval battles around the Solomon Islands. After participating in engagements across Malaya, the Marianas, and Leyte Gulf, she was heavily damaged at the Battle off Samar in October 1944 and subsequently scuttled by torpedoes from the destroyer Fujinami. Implemented at the browser game's initial launch, her Kai Ni form was released in March 2015, and she has appeared in animated films and spin-off manga.

Relationships

Choukai treats Takao and Atago as her elder sisters, while sharing a twin-like relationship with Maya due to their identical completion date and mirrored attire. She holds a poignant historic connection with the destroyer Fujinami, who rescued her crew and scuttled her. Among the fleet, she is frequently grouped with fellow glasses-wearing intellectuals Kirishima and Ooyodo. Early in the game's lifespan, Choukai's voice tracks were temporarily used for the quest notification interface prior to Ooyodo receiving her own dedicated audio.

Trivia

Her name originates from Mount Choukai, located on the border between Akita and Yamagata Prefectures. The designation was later inherited by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyer JS Chōkai. According to character illustrator Parsley, the sailor uniform worn by Choukai and Maya was visually inspired by Japanese school swimsuits. Additionally, because the historical heavy cruiser never received a comprehensive modernization overhaul during wartime, her in-game Kai Ni upgrade uniquely requires a Second Remodel Blueprint to unlock.
