Overview
Yukikaze is a ship girl in Kantai Collection based on the historical eighth Kagerou-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Reflected by her real-life legacy of surviving numerous intense naval engagements almost completely unscathed, she is characterized in the game as a remarkably lucky and highly evasive destroyer. She presents a cheerful, innocent, and youthful demeanor while possessing the pride of a seasoned survivor who weathered the fiercest battles of the Pacific theater.
Appearance
Yukikaze has a youthful build with short brown hair and brown eyes. On the sides of her head, she wears rounded Type 22 radar accessories alongside a small headpiece designed after a fire control director and a speaking tube headset. Her main outfit is a long-sleeved white one-piece sailor dress featuring a blue sailor collar and a yellow neckerchief; notably, the dress lacks a skirt and is semi-translucent. She wears black socks paired with grey high-heeled rudder footwear. Uniquely, she holds a pair of binoculars in her hands rather than a weapon. Her combat rigging includes 61cm quad torpedo tubes carried on her back and a 12.7cm twin gun mount slung over her shoulder like a bag. Her alternate visual forms include a combat variant with a headband, summer swimwear, and a casual autumn ensemble consisting of a grey hoodie, denim shorts, and black tights.
Personality
Yukikaze displays a bright, straightforward, and buoyant temperament. She treats the Admiral with affectionate innocence, often addressing them with a distinctively childlike tone. Despite her endearing, small-animal-like charm, she possesses enough maturity to recognize boundaries and understand subtle interactions. Her battle-hardened background bestows her with a quiet dignity and strong confidence when encouraging her fleet members before sorties.
Abilities
Yukikaze features supreme evasion stats paired with one of the highest initial Luck values among all ship girls. Her exceptional Luck allows her to consistently trigger high-damage torpedo cut-in attacks during night battle phases, granting her offensive capabilities that rival heavily upgraded destroyers. Owing to her historical presence across numerous engagements, she frequently benefits from event-specific damage bonuses. Her Luck stat can be further enhanced through modernization, solidifying her role as an elite strike unit.
Background
Modeled after the legendary warship that survived almost every major Pacific naval battle, Yukikaze carried a reputation for incredible fortune. Following the war, she was pressed into service as a repatriation transport vessel to bring servicemen and civilians back to Japan. She was subsequently transferred to the Republic of China as a war prize, serving under the name Tan Yang as a flagship. In the game, her historical post-war service is reflected through her downloadable upgrades to Tan Yang and Kai Ni forms.
Relationships
She shares a strong bond with Shigure, another survivor ship renowned for her luck, addressing her as an equal. As part of her historical operations, she maintains close ties with her fellow 16th Destroyer Division members—Hatsukaze, Amatsukaze, and Tokitsukaze—as well as 17th Destroyer Division ships like Hamakaze and Isokaze. In derivative works, she is also depicted showing respect toward Hibiki of the 6th Destroyer Division as a senior figure.
Trivia
The artist designed her holding binoculars to symbolize her historical role in witnessing the loss of numerous allied vessels throughout the war. Her facial features and radar antenna attachments have earned her fan nicknames referencing small rodents. Because her craft timer shares the same 24-minute window as several other Kagerou-class destroyers, players seeking to construct her early in the game frequently encountered other ships instead.
