Overview

Sado is a ship girl in Kantai Collection, representing the third vessel of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Etorofu-class escort ships. Depicted as a spunky, self-assured young girl with a tomboyish charm, she serves as a light escort combatant. She debuted during the Autumn 2017 event as an event map clearance reward, making her the first coastal defense ship in the game to be guaranteed as a stage reward rather than a random drop.

Appearance

Sado is a youthful ship girl with long blue hair that transitions into a blonde gradient at the tips, red eyes, and a visible snaggletooth peeking from her mouth. She is often depicted with a triumphant, smug expression, and when heavily damaged, she sits in seiza with a bump on her head. Her default outfit consists of a sleeveless white shirt featuring a blue sailor collar and aqua neckerchief, worn over a short-sleeved black undershirt. She wears white gloves, a blue pleated skirt, plain black tights, and grey loafers. Her equipment includes back-mounted masts and a funnel, a 12 cm gun mount, a 25 mm anti-aircraft gun, depth charges attached to thigh straps and her side, and a blue ribbon tied around her ankle. Her seasonal attire includes a Christmas outfit with a red beret and argyle-patterned tights, a grey cape coat for Setsubun, an oversized Zuiun festival happi coat secured with a white cord, and a dark blue hooded raincoat with rain boots and a mascot attached to her radar unit.

Personality

Sado has an energetic, bold, and tomboyish personality reminiscent of a neighborhood boss kid. She speaks in a rough, masculine tone, frequently lets out a lighthearted, mischievous laugh, and confidently refers to herself in the third person with high esteem. She pays little mind to military rank, interacting with the Admiral in an overly casual and friendly manner as if treating them like a sidekick. While predominantly cheerful and playful, she exhibits a more sentimental side after her remodel when reflecting on past battles. Uniquely among Japanese ship girls, she occasionally uses English greetings when entering the repair dock.

Abilities

Sado possesses high initial anti-submarine warfare stats, enabling her to perform preemptive anti-submarine attacks right at level 1 when equipped with two Type 4 Sonars. She reaches her remodel stage at level 37. Among coastal defense ships, her maximum firepower stat ranks at the top tier for her class, and her maximum reconnaissance capability matches the higher levels found in ships such as Hiburi and Kunashiri.

Background

Sado is modeled after the third historical vessel of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Etorofu-class escort ships, deriving her name from Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. She was added to Kantai Collection during the Autumn 2017 event Showdown at Leyte Gulf (Part 1) as a completion reward for the second event map. Unlike previous coastal defense ships that were available strictly through random battle drops, Sado was the first ship of her vessel type to be offered as a guaranteed reward for clearing an event stage.

Relationships

Sado maintains warm bonds with her sister ships, such as Etorofu and Matsuwa, whom she affectionately addresses using shortened nicknames. She also shares a close connection with her sister Tsushima, who was introduced during the same event. In her interaction with the Admiral, Sado treats them less like a strict commander and more like an informal companion or subordinate, maintaining a uniquely casual closeness.

Trivia

Prior to her official release, Sado's name led to widespread humorous speculation among fans regarding what kind of personality she might possess. Additionally, her Zuiun Festival outfit art was publicly revealed at a real-world collaboration event at Yomizui Land shortly before its official addition to the game.
