Overview
Michishio is a character from the browser game Kantai Collection, representing the third ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Asashio-class destroyers as a ship girl. Available as a common ship from early-game waters, she joins the fleet to engage in battle alongside other ship girls. Reflecting her intense historical combat background, she exhibits a harsh and self-deprecating attitude, though she ultimately harbors deep trust in the Commander. A higher-tier upgrade form, Michishio Kai Ni, was later introduced to the game.
Appearance
She has bright brown hair styled in two side-up hair buns and features yellow eyes. Her costume includes a short-sleeved white shirt paired with a grey suspender skirt and a green ribbon tie at the chest. On her legs and feet, she wears black knee-high socks and red-and-grey rudder footwear. Her back equipment consists of a ship bridge and foremast rigging, while she handles a 12.7 cm twin handgun mount and 61 cm quad torpedo tubes.
Personality
She maintains a sharp and aloof facade upon arrival and in the home port. Due to painful historical memories, she often displays a self-deprecating tone and regret, yet she never uses harsh insults or physical aggression toward the Commander, whom she respectfully addresses as such. Over time, particularly when resupplied, she reveals a softer side, offering reluctant yet genuine words of thanks.
Abilities
Equipped with the standard capabilities of an Asashio-class destroyer, she operates in surface combat using her handheld 12.7 cm twin gun mount and 61 cm quad torpedo tubes. Upon suffering moderate damage, she vows to strike back with double force, and undergoing further remodeling transforms her into Michishio Kai Ni, significantly enhancing her combat performance.
Background
In history, while she was undergoing repairs, her sisters of the 8th Destroyer Division (Asashio, Ooshio, and Arashio) were all sunk, leaving her as the sole survivor. Transferring between multiple destroyer divisions, she eventually joined the Nishimura Fleet and fought in the catastrophic Battle of Surigao Strait. This tragic history heavily influences her lines during repairs and battle.
Relationships
She belongs to the same original unit as her sister ships Asashio, Ooshio, and Arashio in the 8th Destroyer Division. She also shares strong historical ties with Fusou, Yamashiro, Mogami, Shigure, Asagumo, and Yamagumo as members of the Nishimura Fleet. Among them, she shares the specific design feature of a ribbon tie with Asagumo and Yamagumo.
Trivia
Historically, after the lead ship Asashio was lost in action, the Asashio-class destroyers were officially renamed the Michishio-class. Additionally, her name was later inherited by two generations of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force submarines named Michishio.
