Overview

Haguro is a shipgirl from the web browser game Kantai Collection, representing the fourth and youngest vessel of the Myoukou-class heavy cruisers. Characterized by her reserved demeanor and low self-confidence, she stands out among her sisters as a gentle and hesitant figure. Despite her modest disposition, her design reflects an extensive combat service across major Pacific War engagements, establishing her in-game as a reliable heavy cruiser capable of sustaining frontline operations.

Appearance

Haguro has shoulder-length black hair styled in a bob cut, paired with dark or brown eyes. Her face retains a youthful impression, accented by perpetually downturned eyebrows and a slightly stooped posture. She wears the class-standard purple military jacket alongside a black pencil skirt, white pantyhose, and white gloves. Her attire includes a hair accessory modeled after a ship catapult and air-search radar, as well as a chest badge shaped like the silhouette of a surface radar.

Personality

Haguro is exceptionally soft-spoken, self-effacing, and quick to apologize even for minor matters. She lacks assertiveness and often puts others before herself, displaying a deeply caring nature that frequently evokes protective instincts from those around her. Underneath her timid exterior, however, she possesses a resolute spirit during combat, adopting a focused posture when engaged in battle. As she undergoes remodeling, she develops greater self-assurance, standing firmly alongside her fleetmates without hesitation.

Abilities

As a heavy cruiser, Haguro handles mid-range artillery and torpedo engagements, wielding 20.3cm twin gun mounts, high-angle anti-aircraft guns, 61cm quadruple oxygen torpedoes, and surface radar equipment. She demonstrates strong performance during night combat. Upon reaching her Kai Ni second remodel, her stats in firepower, torpedo strength, and evasion rise to the top tier among heavy cruisers. Additionally, her stat parameters include high maximum luck values that reflect her historical evasion of fatal combat damage.

Background

Haguro's design originates from the Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser of the same name, constructed in Nagasaki and commissioned in 1929. Following the onset of WWII, she took part in numerous naval operations, including the Battle of the Java Sea, Coral Sea, Midway, Eastern Solomons, Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf. She gained a reputation as a lucky ship due to repeatedly escaping critical damage through unexploded ordnance and narrow evasions. In May 1945, while undertaking a resupply mission, she was ambushed in the Malacca Strait during the Battle of Penang and sank after a fierce final engagement.

Relationships

As the youngest sister of the Myoukou class, Haguro shares close family ties with her elder sisters Myoukou, Nachi, and Ashigara, frequently deploying alongside them in frontline operations. She also holds a profound connection with the destroyer Kamikaze, who accompanied her during her final mission in the Malacca Strait and successfully rescued hundreds of surviving crew members after Haguro sank. Towards the Commander, Haguro acts with deep deference and gratitude, striving to fulfill her duties without burdening him.

Trivia

The ship's name originates from Mount Haguro, one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa in Yamagata Prefecture. The historical shipwreck was identified in 2003, though reports later emerged of illicit salvage activities targeting its metal. In 2021, the name was resurrected for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Maya-class guided-missile destroyer Haguro. In fan culture, her medium damage illustration gained widespread notice for her intensely embarrassed reaction.
