Overview

Kamoi is a ship girl from Kantai Collection based on the historical Japanese vessel named after Cape Kamoi in Hokkaido. Built at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, she functions in-game as an auxiliary ship. She possesses a rare progression mechanic, shifting from a fleet oiler to a seaplane tender, and ultimately returning to an oiler upon reaching her final upgrade.

Appearance

She has silvery hair on the outside with blue on the inside, framed by thick blue eyebrows and styled into a folded ponytail, alongside blue eyes. Her attire is an extensively modified outfit inspired by traditional Ainu clothing, including a matanpus headband bearing aiusi-style patterns. Her upper garment consists of a cropped jacket covering her shoulders, sleeves, and upper back, while her lower garment is a white sleeveless piece with a waist sash and a high slit on the left side, exposing her hip and side. She wears tekunpe wrist guards and short deer-pelt boots wrapped with leg bandages. When converted into a seaplane tender, her wrist guards are removed, and her footwear changes to thigh boots. In her final oiler form, her headband pattern alters, a short front apron with dyed patterns is added, and marked equipment featuring the character 'mo' is carried.

Personality

She carries herself with a polite, mild-mannered, and devoted temperament. She frequently weaves traditional Ainu greetings into her speech. Despite her overseas construction history, she displays a fond preference for traditional Japanese cuisine, enjoying daily meals like dried horse mackerel and wakame miso soup. She is deeply conscientious of her operational duties and cares greatly for the safety of her fellow fleet members.

Abilities

In her initial oiler form, she can carry underway replenishment supplies, drum canisters, and various seaplanes. Upon upgrading to a seaplane tender, she gains the ability to equip midget submarines, landing craft, secondary guns, large radars, and depth charge throwers, though she loses the ability to carry replenishment gear. In her final oiler state, she regains access to replenishment items and sonar, while acquiring the rare capacity to equip large flying boats such as the Type 2 Flying Boat.

Background

Her real-world namesake was constructed in the United States to evaluate turbo-electric propulsion systems, initially delivering oil before being converted into a seaplane tender. During her service years, she notably took part in the search for missing aviator Amelia Earhart. Reverting to an oiler during World War II, she was assigned to critical escort tasks such as the Hi-87 convoy. She entered the game during a limited-time spring event and was later added to Large Ship Construction.

Relationships

She shares a connection with Saratoga, having been constructed at the same shipyard in New York, which mechanically links her as a secretary ship for constructing Saratoga. She maintains close ties with the destroyers Hamakaze, Isokaze, and Shigure, who served alongside her during convoy operations. She also references the seaplane tender Mizuho and shares a historical organizational fleet connection with Kashima.

Trivia

Due to her distinct Ainu-themed outfit and visual elements, she has inspired various fan nicknames. She also receives specialized seasonal outfit artwork and seasonal voice lines during limited-time in-game events like the Christmas season.
