Appearance

He is described as a stout, heavily built man who wore a standard naval officer's service cap.

Personality

He had a reputation as an exceptionally demanding commander who pushed his aircrews through grueling training regimes, yet his harshness was tempered by a pragmatic calculation of readiness rather than blind zealotry. Though not originally an aviation officer, he possessed a tireless work ethic, studying relentlessly to master carrier operations. In private life, he was a devoted husband who sent hundreds of affectionate letters home. He possessed a jovial, larger-than-life demeanor paired with a legendary appetite and a deep love for physical sports like sumo.

Abilities

Graduating second from the Naval Academy and first from the Naval War College, he possessed a top-tier strategic mind and advanced torpedo training, later becoming highly proficient in carrier aviation operations. During the Battle of Midway, he demonstrated exceptional tactical awareness by identifying the risk of aircraft rearmament, urging an immediate launch, and pushing for enhanced aerial scouting. Despite his heavy build, he had outstanding physical agility and endurance. Additionally, during his posting in Washington, he proved adept at intelligence gathering, successfully obtaining key United States Naval Gunnery manuals and fleet exercise plans.

Background

Born in Tokyo in 1892 to a former Matsue domain samurai family descending from Sengoku-era commander Munenaga Yamaguchi, he entered the navy and served in the Mediterranean during World War I. He completed two diplomatic tours in Washington before commanding the 1st Combined Air Group during the Sino-Japanese War. At the start of the Pacific War, he led the Second Carrier Division in the Pearl Harbor attack and Indian Ocean raids. At Midway in 1942, after three companion carriers were knocked out, he launched a desperate counterstrike from Hiryu that damaged American carriers, ultimately choosing to sink with his flagship alongside Captain Tomeo Kaku.

Relationships

He shared a lifelong friendship with Naval Academy classmate Takijiro Onishi, with whom he was infamous for wild academy brawls during pole-downing contests, and remained close with classmate Megumi Igarashi. Under Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, he repeatedly offered decisive operational recommendations, such as immediate counterattacks and thorough scouting. He stood alongside Isoroku Yamamoto in opposing the London Naval Treaty compromises, and American intelligence officers considered him a brilliantly capable leader worthy of succeeding Yamamoto. In his final hours at Midway, he remained stoically aboard Hiryu with Captain Tomeo Kaku.

Trivia

His given name Tamon originates from Masashige Kusunoki's childhood moniker Tamonmaru, as well as the Buddhist war deity Tamonten. He is famous for devouring a multi-course French dinner aboard the battleship Yamato and complaining that the portion size was insufficient. In fiction, he appears as an isekai'd commander in the manga Drifters, inspired a female general character in Sengoku Rance, and is frequently referenced by name in the voice lines of the shipgirl Hiryu in Kantai Collection.
