Kamikaze

Overview

Kamikaze is a shipgirl from Kantai Collection representing the lead ship of the Kamikaze-class destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Possessing one of the oldest vessel histories among the playable destroyers in the game, she takes pride in her service despite her outdated specifications. Earnest and strong-willed, she actively dedicates herself to convoy escort duties and assisting the Admiral with administrative tasks.

Appearance

Kamikaze is designed in the style of a Taisho-era schoolgirl. She has long, straight, reddish-purple hair reaching her waist that gradients into pink at the tips, secured with a large yellow ribbon at the back, and purple eyes. She wears a white under-kimono with a red long-sleeved outer kimono featuring yellow trim, bound by a yellow sash and tied up with tasuki cords. Over this, she wears a pink hakama skirt decorated with cherry blossom embroidery and a tiny anchor accessory on the sash cord. Her footwear consists of dark brown high-heeled boots. Her rigging attaches around her waist with a chimney and bridge structure, equipped with torpedo tubes and single gun mounts.

Personality

Kamikaze is dutiful, spirited, and efficient in her duties. She takes joy in looking after the Admiral, acting almost like an elder sibling by preparing meals and offering hot drinks. Despite her dependable nature, she has a youthful side; she gets embarrassed when praised and tries to hide her fear of the dark by subtly asking for company at night. She also feels somewhat self-conscious about overly skin-ship heavy interactions or wearing revealing outfits.

Abilities

Though starting with simple equipment and modest baseline parameters due to her legacy build, Kamikaze possesses high Luck and one of the highest Evasion stats among all destroyers. Upon upgrading, her anti-submarine and anti-aircraft attributes rise significantly, allowing her to perform opening anti-submarine attacks at relatively low levels and excel at night-battle cut-in strikes.

Background

Constructed during the Taisho era, Kamikaze holds a long history of active service, surviving numerous intense battles throughout the Pacific theater until the end of the war. Assigned to Destroyer Division 1 and other fleets, she carried out extensive convoy protection and combat operations. Fully aware of her older design, she holds a firm belief that a destroyer's true worth is not determined solely by technical specifications.

Relationships

She shares a close and warm bond with the Admiral, taking pleasure in taking care of them. She maintains deeply caring relationships with the Myoukou-class heavy cruisers, such as Haguro and Ashigara, often going out of her way to reassure them or accommodate their gestures. As the eldest of the Kamikaze-class, she also acts as a responsible and attentive elder sister to Harukaze and her other sister ships.

Trivia

Her signature outfit combining a kimono and hakama references her historical construction during the Taisho era, a period when such schoolgirl attire was prominent. She is quite sensitive about topics regarding her long operational history and age, often trying to quickly cover up her words if she accidentally brings up how old she is.
