Overview
Naka is a ship girl from the game Kantai Collection, embodying the historical third vessel of the Sendai-class light cruisers. Positioned as the self-proclaimed fleet idol, she brings energetic passion and high-spirited enthusiasm wherever she goes. Functioning as a dependable light cruiser available early in the game, she historically served as the flagship of the 4th Torpedo Squadron, leading escort and transport operations.
Appearance
She features medium brown hair styled into twin buns with two protruding ahoge strands, paired with brown eyes. Her baseline costume consists of an orange shirt with a white sailor collar, a black neckerchief, a black pleated skirt, black elbow-length gloves, black socks, and black shoes. Her mechanical rigging comprises funnels at her ankles, 14 cm single gun mounts attached to her forearm gloves with a catapult unit on her right side, and two quad 61 cm torpedo launchers mounted on a black waist belt. Upon her Kai Ni upgrade, she transitions into a frilled stage costume complete with a handheld microphone.
Personality
Exuberant and irrepressibly high-spirited, she constantly exudes infectious energy. She has absolute confidence in her role as the fleet's idol, frequently addressing herself in the third person. While she shows self-centered concern over her appearance even when taking damage during battle, she also displays a warm, protective side toward junior destroyers, willingly stepping up to guide and shield them when trouble arises.
Abilities
As a light cruiser, she balances respectable firepower and torpedo capability with exceptional anti-submarine capabilities. Her Kai Ni form significantly enhances her anti-submarine and anti-air stats, allowing her to perform opening anti-submarine strikes effectively against underwater targets. She can equip standard naval guns, torpedo launchers, and radar systems, making her a dependable unit during transport escort missions.
Background
The historical cruiser Naka was damaged on her slipway during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, requiring her to be scrapped and rebuilt before being commissioned in 1925 with a redesigned double-curved bow. During World War II, she served as the flagship of the 4th Torpedo Squadron in the Philippines and Java Sea operations before sustaining heavy damage near Christmas Island. Following extensive repairs, she transitioned to transport escort duties in the Central Pacific until her sinking at Truk in 1944. In the game, she is obtainable early on and was the first of her class to receive a Kai Ni form at level 48.
Relationships
She is the youngest of the Sendai-class light cruisers, alongside her older sisters Sendai, who is obsessed with night battles, and Jintsuu, who possesses a calm, resolute composure. As the flagship of the 4th Torpedo Squadron, she earned the deep respect of destroyers such as Nowaki, who addresses her formally. She also maintains connections with the auxiliary ship Asahi, who assisted in her emergency repairs, as well as Isuzu and the junior idol-themed destroyer Momo.
Trivia
Her name derives from the Naka River spanning Tochigi and Ibaraki prefectures, where a memorial monument stands at Oarai Isosaki Shrine. Her registry index and Kai Ni level both feature the number 48, referencing real-world idol group conventions. Because dismantling her yields 2 fuel, 4 ammo, and 11 steel, the sequence 2-4-11 became a widespread fan meme, eventually spawning the viral hit song Koi no 2-4-11, which gained official recognition and karaoke distribution.
