Overview

Tenryuu is a light cruiser shipgirl from Kantai Collection, serving as the first ship of the Tenryuu class. Designed to lead torpedo squadrons and command destroyers, she presents herself as a tough, highly energetic, and combat-oriented leader. Using the masculine pronoun 'ore', she often tries to project a fierce and intimidating atmosphere, though she is genuinely caring toward others. Operating closely with her sister ship Tatsuta, she is a reliable light cruiser available to players from the early stages of the game.

Appearance

Tenryuu has short purple hair, yellow eyes, and an eyepatch covering her left eye. She wears floating purple-glowing headgear resembling horns. Her uniform consists of a white collared shirt, a black-and-white patterned tie, a black jacket, a black skirt, black thighhigh stockings, black footwear, and black fingerless gloves. On her back, she carries semi-futuristic rigging featuring a naval bridge structure flanked by two 14 cm single guns, and she holds a sword designed after a ship's bow. During medium damage, her purple glowing parts blink red. Her summer outfit features a white bikini with black trim and a bodyboard.

Personality

Tenryuu possesses a tomboyish, headstrong personality, boasting about her strength and showing high enthusiasm for night battles. Despite her blustery outer demeanor and intimidating remarks, she is fundamentally tenderhearted, caring, and protective toward younger ships. She actively takes on a big-sister role, adjusting activities to suit shorter destroyers. However, she is surprisingly weak against horror themes, creating a stark contrast with her tough front. This gap between her fierce pride and vulnerable nature makes her easily teased by those around her.

Abilities

As a light cruiser armed with 14 cm single guns and torpedo tubes, Tenryuu provides fleet support with a heavy emphasis on anti-air performance. Upon receiving her Kai Ni upgrade, her anti-air capabilities increase significantly, allowing her to trigger anti-air cut-in attacks when equipped with high-angle artillery. Additionally, she is one of the few non-battleship vessels capable of equipping Searchlights. However, her outfit options restrict the use of reconnaissance seaplanes, secondary guns, and large radars.

Background

Tenryuu is based on the historical Japanese light cruiser of the same name, completed shortly after World War I to serve as a flagship leading destroyer divisions in night operations. Historically, she participated in key Pacific War engagements, including the Battle of Wake Island and the First Battle of the Solomon Islands, before being sunk by a submarine torpedo in December 1942. In the game, her low operational cost leads to her frequently commanding long-distance expedition missions.

Relationships

She shares a close bond with her sister ship, Tatsuta, who frequently teases and manipulates her, though the two remain inseparable partners. She takes great care of younger destroyers, particularly the Sixth Destroyer Division, serving as a protective leader figure for them. With Kiso, another eyepatch-wearing light cruiser who uses masculine speech, Tenryuu shares a competitive rivalry; despite arguing over their overlapping tropes, they cooperate effectively during daily tasks.

Trivia

Her name is derived from the Tenryu River flowing into the Enshu Sea. In-game features reveal that she drinks juice rather than alcoholic beverages at the naval base counter bar, showing she cannot handle alcohol. She serves as a primary protagonist in the spin-off manga series 'Torpedo Squadron Chronicles' and regularly appears across official media releases.
