Overview
Yahagi is a character from Kantai Collection, based on the historical Japanese Agano-class light cruiser of the same name. Represented as the third ship of her class and a former flagship of the Second Torpedo Squadron, she fulfills the role of a reliable, dignified leader among light cruisers. Balancing top-tier combat capabilities with a conscientious and caring nature, she stands out as a cool yet pure-hearted key figure within her fleet.
Appearance
Yahagi features long black hair tied into a ponytail with a reddish-purple band, accompanied by sidelocks, hair between her eyes, and striking red eyes. She wears a sleeveless sailor uniform that exposes her shoulders and midriff, paired with a dark blue necktie, a crimson pleated skirt, a black belt, and long white gloves. Her footwear consists of rudder boots, with asymmetrical legwear featuring a single thigh-high stocking held by a garter strap on her left leg. Her rigging includes a bridge structure on her back, twin main gun mounts operated via a joystick, a twin anti-aircraft gun on her right boot, and a flight deck on her left boot. She is also depicted with a full bust.
Personality
Yahagi has a dignified, serious, and pure-hearted temperament. She is highly attentive to the Admiral, comfortably speaking in a warm, familiar manner and even attempting to handle administrative tasks, though desk work easily overwhelms her. While she sternly reprimands her older sister Agano when needed, she tenderly watches over her youngest sister Sakawa. Despite her cool and resolute military demeanor, she displays endearing gaps: she reacts modestly to victory, feels lonely when left unattended, and gets excited in battle. She also reveals a slightly naive side by referring to Sasebo burgers with an unusually descriptive name, and habitually adjusts her right glove while striking a stylish pose.
Abilities
Yahagi possesses superior combat capabilities within the Agano class, boasting the highest evasion stat among all light cruisers alongside exceptional durability. Although her initial firepower lagged slightly behind certain earlier light cruisers, a subsequent update boosted her firepower to tie with Ooyodo Kai for second place among light cruisers. She features a convertible remodeling option between her Kai Ni and Kai Ni Otsu forms. Despite the higher fuel and ammunition consumption inherent to her ship class, her high survival stats allow her to perform excellently as a torpedo squadron flagship.
Background
Yahagi was introduced to Kantai Collection during the autumn 2013 limited-time event as a highly rare drop in the final stage, later becoming available through Large Ship Construction and standard map drops. Her historical namesake was a light cruiser constructed at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal, which took part in severe late-war engagements including Operation Ten-Go alongside the battleship Yamato. Reflecting her historical roots in Sasebo, she was prominently featured in official real-world regional collaboration events held in Sasebo City. In 2021, her Kai Ni and Kai Ni Otsu second-remodel forms were officially implemented in the game.
Relationships
As the third ship of the Agano class, Yahagi maintains distinct bonds with her sisters: she keeps her eldest sister Agano in check with strict guidance, while warmly caring for her youngest sister Sakawa and sharing flagship solidarity with Noshiro. She shares a profound connection with the battleship Yamato, having fought alongside her in their final operation; this historical bond is reflected in her physical design choices and her deep respect toward Yamato. Furthermore, she maintains close historical ties with the destroyers Yukikaze and Hatsushimo, who rescued her crew upon her sinking, as well as the aircraft carrier Shokaku, whose crew Yahagi helped rescue in an earlier battle.
Trivia
During the real-life launch ceremony of the original light cruiser Yahagi, commemorative sake cups were distributed featuring drawings of arrows and bush clover blossoms instead of her name to maintain military secrecy, a detail referenced in her in-game dialogue. In a 2014 magazine feature, former Yahagi crew member Takekuni Ikeda was shown her character illustration and praised her design. Additionally, 77 years after World War II, the name was revived by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for the Mogami-class frigate JS Yahagi (FFM-5), reuniting the modern namesakes of Noshiro, Yahagi, and Agano.
