Overview
Asakaze is a shipgirl in Kantai Collection, representing the second vessel of the Kamikaze-class destroyers. Styled in Meiji-era schoolgirl attire, she is a lively and high-spirited girl who takes pride in acting like an elder sister. Initially introduced as a drop reward during a limited-time event, she was later made available in standard sea areas, serving alongside her sister ships in the 5th Destroyer Division.
Appearance
Asakaze features blue eyes and long, wavy light brown hair parted in the middle, displaying her forehead and adorned with large blue ribbons on both sides. Her outfit resembles a Meiji-era schoolgirl uniform, consisting of a white furisode top with blue-gradient sleeves, a cobalt blue hakama skirt tied with a golden sash featuring an anchor motif, and knee-high lace-up boots. Her rigging is equipped with a smokestack, mast, and twin torpedo launcher on her back, alongside single-gun turrets mounted on deck-like platforms near her thighs. Additionally, she holds a pistol-like single-gun turret modeled after a ship's bow and marked with the number 5.
Personality
Asakaze has an energetic, assertive, and slightly arrogant demeanor, interacting with the Admiral in a remarkably casual manner. While proud of her accomplishments, she is highly sensitive to scolding or mockery, often getting flustered when teased. She frequently acts bossy toward her younger sisters, yet completely defers to her eldest sister. Highly active in the early hours of the morning, her motivation drops noticeably once night falls. She also possesses a strong preference for barley rice over bread.
Abilities
Asakaze shares the general combat performance of her class, possessing slightly higher firepower stats compared to some of her sister ships. She operates her ship-bow single cannon alongside her mounted torpedo equipment in combat. With appropriate specialized equipment installed, she is also capable of performing opening anti-submarine attacks.
Background
She was first introduced during the Autumn 2016 event 'Command! Fleet Operational Method No.3' as an event-exclusive drop. Later, she became permanently obtainable in regular maps following the addition of the waters off Penang Island, serving as part of the fleet's light destroyer forces.
Relationships
She holds her eldest sister, Kamikaze, in high regard and greatly fears her scoldings. Toward her younger sisters—Harukaze, Matsukaze, and Hatakaze—she puts on an authoritative older-sister facade. She bickers constantly with Matsukaze, though the two share a close bond underneath. She addresses the Admiral directively as Commander.
Trivia
Her visual color scheme—featuring a deep blue outfit paired with a gold sash—is a subtle design homage to the blue and gold livery of the famous Japanese National Railways sleeper express train named Asakaze.
