Overview

Sugi is a shipgirl from Kantai Collection representing the seventh vessel of the Matsu-class destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was first unveiled during a live stage production in early 2025 before being introduced into the browser game as a drop reward in a limited-time event. Designed by Umihara Sakana, she shares thematic uniform ties with her Matsu-class sisters and plays a role alongside members of the Rei-go Operation.

Appearance

Sugi features long green hair with a pair of distinct cowlicks on top, green eyes, and bangs parted in the center with the left side secured by an orange hairclip. Her rear hair is tied with a green ribbon. She wears a khaki sailor shirt with a white collar, a grey choker, a black corset with a zipper pull tab, a white pleated skirt, red thighhighs, black fingerless gloves, and black boots styled after ship rudders. A green bandana with white stripes is bound around her left arm. Her military gear includes back-mounted funnels and a foremast equipped with radar, a 12.7 cm single mount, and 61 cm quad torpedo tubes fastened to her right thigh strap.

Personality

Sugi has a tomboyish, energetic demeanor and speaks in a casual, direct manner. Initially portrayed as somewhat lax and prone to slacking off during exercises, she develops a strong sense of duty under rigorous mentorship. In her daily duties, she handles paperwork and missions efficiently despite occasional complaints. She exhibits a playful personality, often tossing out theatrical expressions of fondness or proposal jokes when receiving snacks or leave permissions from the Admiral. When appropriate, she is capable of quickly switching to formal speech.

Abilities

As a Matsu-class destroyer, Sugi operates as a surface combatant capable of anti-aircraft and escort duties. Her equipment includes a foremast equipped with radar for search and detection, a 61 cm quad torpedo tube assembly mounted on her leg for surface attacks, a 12.7 cm single mount for localized firepower, and 25 mm triple anti-aircraft guns for defensive screening.

Background

Sugi debuted in the February 2025 stage play before officially arriving in the browser game during the 'Break Through! Victory at Operation Rei-go' event in March 2025 as a drop reward. Narrative depictions trace her arc from an inexperienced recruit struggling through training to a dependable escort vessel trusted with guarding wounded allies. Historically, the destroyer survived World War II, served as a repatriation vessel after the war, and was subsequently handed over to the Republic of China in 1947.

Relationships

She shares close sisterly bonds with her fellow Matsu-class destroyers, including Kaya, Kashi, and Ume, sharing a matching twin-ahoge trait with Ume. Within the Rei-go Operation force, Kasumi acts as a stern mentor who whips Sugi into shape despite her initial laziness. She also interacts lively with Ashigara and Kiyoshimo, taking on the responsibility of escorting the injured Kiyoshimo during operations. She maintains a casual yet respectful working relationship with the Admiral.

Trivia

Because her name translates to Japanese cedar (sugi), she is frequently made the subject of fan jokes regarding seasonal pollen allergies. Her character visual design was created by Umihara Sakana. Her live-action stage play actress and her in-game voice actress are different individuals, leading to joint guest appearances at official off-site events.
