Overview
Azhdaha is an ancient Geo dragon from the open-world game Genshin Impact. Originating as a primordial elemental creature deep beneath Liyue, he was once an equal companion and combat ally to the Geo Archon Morax (Zhongli), co-founding and protecting the nation. However, after losing his sanity due to human mining activities damaging the leylines and the inevitable effects of erosion, he turned hostile toward humanity and was sealed beneath the Dragon-Queller tree. Possessing martial strength comparable to a deity, he stands as a legendary figure of ancient authority.
Appearance
Azhdaha is a massive, quadrupedal rock dragon with a heavy physique resembling a crocodilian or snapping turtle. He possesses two curved horns on his head, sharp armor-like plates along his back, and red eyes. His thick tail terminates in a structure fused with heavy tree branches. His body features a palette of earthy brown combined with bright orange gradients. Additionally, his fractured consciousness physically manifests through human avatars: a small girl named Jiu who embodies his rage, and a young blacksmith descendant named Kun Jun who carries his remaining goodwill.
Personality
Originally, Azhdaha possessed a proud, honorable temperament that respected contracts and favored skilled human craftsmen. However, long centuries of erosion and imprisonment fractured his mind into conflicting aspects. His dominant malicious side is consumed by deep rage, grief, and resentment over being forgotten and trapped underground. Conversely, his lingering benevolent side retains an enduring loyalty to Morax and his original oath to protect humanity, going so far as to help suppress his own rampant, dark persona.
Abilities
Azhdaha relies on devastating physical attacks, including massive localized stomps, body slams, charge attacks, and tail sweeps. He possesses extremely high innate Geo and physical resistance. During combat, he can absorb up to two additional elemental attributes from a pool of Hydro, Pyro, Electro, and Cryo, temporarily increasing his resistance to those elements and imprinting target targets without shields with persistent damage-over-time marks. He can also burrow underground to trigger wide-scale rockfalls and localized tremors.
Background
Originally a blind Geo creature dwelling beneath the earth, he was brought to the surface by Morax, who granted him sight and carved his form. After swearing to live peacefully alongside humans, he fought side by side with Morax for centuries. However, as human mining damaged the earth and erosion took its toll, he lost his mind and attacked human settlements. Following a colossal battle against Morax and the Adepti, he voluntarily allowed himself to be sealed beneath the Dragon-Queller tree once his rationality briefly returned. In the modern era, his lingering hatred attempted a revival, but his remaining benevolent spirit guided Morax to reinforce the seal.
Relationships
Morax (Zhongli) was his closest friend and equal partner rather than a master, though Azhdaha's corrupted self now harbors intense hatred toward him. He also fought against Adepti such as Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper during his original imprisonment. Within his split consciousness, Jiu represents his vengeful rage, while the mortal blacksmith descendant Kun Jun serves as the vessel for his remaining kindness and nostalgia for his old friend.
Trivia
His name is derived from Aži Dahāka, a mythical dragon-like creature in Persian mythology. Visually, his design draws inspiration from archaic Chinese dragon depictions (which often incorporated crocodilian and frog-like traits) as well as real-world animals such as snapping turtles, Komodo dragons, and stegosaurs. The lyrics in his multi-phase battle themes, 'Tqionggao' and 'Rockeye's Demise,' are written in the style of ancient Chinese Chu Ci poetry, mixed with orchestral instrumentation, electric guitar, and erhu.
