Shenhe

Overview

Shenhe is a playable character from the open-world action role-playing game Genshin Impact. Born into a branch of an exorcist clan in Liyue, she is a human woman who was taken in and raised as a disciple by the adeptus Cloud Retainer. Wielding a polearm and possessing a Cryo Vision, she lived a long period of secluded ascetic training deep in the mountains. Due to her detached nature and martial talents, mortals often mistake her for a mysterious white-haired adeptus.

Appearance

Shenhe is a tall woman with a voluptuous figure, silver-gray eyes, and clear white hair that fades from its former black color, styled into a long braided ponytail with a side fringe partially concealing her right eye. She wears a hair ornament, tassel earrings, partially fingerless black gloves, and a tight black backless bodysuit with shoulder cutouts and hip vents that transitions in color down to her integrated footwear. Red cords are bound around her body to suppress her impulses. She also possesses an alternate black formal outfit known as Frostflower Dew.

Personality

Because her soul is bound by red cords to suppress her innate ferocity, Shenhe displays a calm, detached, and emotionally reserved demeanor. Having spent years isolated from human society, she severely lacks common sense regarding mortal customs. Despite her cold impression, she is inherently straightforward and honest. When confronted with troublemakers, her instinct is to resort to blunt, physical force. Through her bonds with the Traveler and companions in Liyue Harbor, she gradually develops a sense of empathy and belonging.

Abilities

Shenhe is a support combatant who utilizes a polearm and Cryo elemental adeptal arts. Her Elemental Skill allows her to dash forward or deal area-of-effect Cryo damage while granting party members the Icy Quill status, which increases their Cryo damage based on her own Attack stat. Her Elemental Blow unleashes a Talisman Spirit that creates a field, dealing periodic Cryo damage while reducing enemies' Cryo and Physical Resistance and boosting allies' Cryo capabilities within the area.

Background

At six years old, following her mother's death, Shenhe was sacrificed by her father to a remnant of a defeated god inside a mountain cave. She fought the dark entity instinctually until Cloud Retainer rescued her. To control her violent destiny, the adepti bound her soul with red cords and raised her in isolation. Sent to Liyue Harbor to assist in gathering materials for the Jade Chamber, she befriended the Traveler and eventually unleashed her full power to freeze a massive wave and defeat the sea monster Beisht, finding her place among humanity.

Relationships

Cloud Retainer (Xianyun) acts as both her adeptus master and parental figure. Ganyu is her senior martial sister under the same master. Chongyun is her distant nephew from the same lineage of exorcists. She forms deep bonds of friendship with the Traveler, Paimon, and Yun Jin; the latter authored the famous opera The Divine Damsel of Devastation based on Shenhe's dramatic childhood and heroic deeds.

Trivia

Her design features and color scheme of white, black, and red draw visual inspiration from the red-crowned crane. Though originally black-haired as a child, her hair turned white after being combed with an adeptal comb. Her habit of eating wild herbs was not purely for ascetic training, but also because her adepti masters lacked cooking skills. To adapt to human society, she occasionally works part-time at Wanmin Restaurant.
