Overview

Dvalin is a character in Genshin Impact, residing as a colossal elemental dragon who served as the first familiar of the Anemo Archon Barbatos and stands as the Dragon of the East among Mondstadt's Four Winds. Suffering from corrupted blood and abyssal curses, he temporarily took residence in the ruins of Old Mondstadt, inflicting devastating storms upon the nation under the moniker Stormterror. Following his purification by the Traveler and the Anemo Archon, he reclaimed his freedom to roam the skies at will.

Appearance

Dvalin is a massive dragon adorned in vivid blue and turquoise tones, featuring blue eyes, sharp fangs, and long claws. His head bears two prominent horns, and his back supports six large, feathered wings. While afflicted by corruption, two glowing purple spikes of congealed toxic blood protruded from the back of his neck. His visual styling draws concept inspiration from the real-world marine organism Glaucus atlanticus.

Personality

Originally a simple yet wise elemental organism, Dvalin acquired human speech and established a deep, protective love for Mondstadt. He remains deeply devoted to Barbatos, though he displays a refreshingly candid and sarcastic attitude whenever the Archon loafs around during serious endeavors. Although corruption temporarily left him consumed by agony and a sense of betrayal, his true nature is gentle, high-minded, and fond of unfettered freedom.

Abilities

Dvalin commands potent Anemo energy and executes swift aerial combat maneuvers. His battle repertoire includes rapid diving charges, ferocious biting attacks, wide Anemo breath sweeps, and explosive wind projectiles. His landmark skill, Caelestinum Finale Termini, cracks terrain platforms to inflict escalating Anemo damage over time, compelling enemies to use updrafts to change positions. When severely weakened, he rains down meteorites and can channel a destructive Anemo sphere. He maintains a heavy posture shield that, once broken, leaves him temporarily incapacitated.

Background

After encountering Barbatos and learning human speech, Dvalin became one of Mondstadt's Four Winds. One thousand years ago, following the fall of the old aristocracy, he joined Barbatos in blowing away snow and leveling rugged terrain so that warm ocean currents could foster agriculture. Five hundred years ago during the Cataclysm, he answered the call to battle the shadow dragon Durin, slaying the beast over Dragonspine by crushing its throat. However, swallowing Durin's tainted blood infected Dvalin, leaving him tortured for centuries and prone to manipulation by the Abyss Order until the Traveler destroyed the blood clots on his neck.

Relationships

Barbatos, who takes the mortal form of Venti, is Dvalin's master and closest companion, with whom he shares a comfortable bond despite occasionally chiding the Archon's irresponsible behavior. The Traveler is his savior who breached the corrupted blood clots binding him to the Abyss. The Abyss Order acted as hostile manipulators seeking to convert his suffering into a military weapon, while the shadow dragon Durin was his ancient opponent whose toxic blood caused Dvalin's long plight.

Trivia

Dvalin's name derives from the Norse mythological dwarf Dvalinn—meaning sleeping or dormant one—as well as one of the four stags of Yggdrasil and a dwarf character in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. Within Genshin Impact, he acts as the climax boss of the Prologue storyline and remains unique as the only weekly domain boss that must be challenged strictly in single-player mode.
