Overview

Sucrose is a character from Genshin Impact. She is an alchemist affiliated with the Knights of Favonius in Mondstadt, serving as the assistant to the Chief Alchemist, Albedo. Specializing in the field of bio-alchemy, she seeks to modify and refine existing lifeforms to enrich the natural world. Although extremely introverted and socially anxious around people, she possesses an insatiable scientific curiosity, exceptional intellect, and a profound dedication to her research.

Appearance

She has light green hair styled in a low ponytail with M-shaped bangs, an ahoge, and subtle highlights. Her golden-yellow eyes are framed by semi-rimless glasses. She possesses unique animal ears that she blends into her hair to avoid standing out. Her attire consists of a long-sleeved alchemist uniform with white gloves, a small hat, a cloak featuring a stylized feline head design on the back, black suspender stockings, and mid-calf boots with animal paw-print patterns on the soles, accompanied by glass flasks and potion bottles.

Personality

Sucrose is timid, deeply introverted, and easily overwhelmed by social interactions, often stammering or attempting to flee when confronted by strangers. However, when it comes to her scientific pursuits, she transforms into a passionate and tireless researcher who gladly spends days locked inside her laboratory. Despite her social awkwardness, she is remarkably perceptive and kind-hearted, able to read others' underlying emotional struggles and offer thoughtful support. She suffers from an infamous tendency to give her altered botanical creations excessively long, overly technical codenames. Her eccentricities also extend to her personal habits: she collects bone skeletons to stimulate her creative thinking and prioritizes raw nutritional function over culinary taste in her diet.

Abilities

Sucrose commands the Anemo element using a catalyst, functioning as a support and sub-DPS focused on triggering Swirl reactions and boosting her team's elemental stats. Her Normal Attack unleashes wind spirits, while her Charged Attack consumes stamina to deal AoE Anemo damage that knocks enemies back. Her Elemental Skill summons a small wind spirit that pulls surrounding enemies inward and launches them into the air. Her Elemental Burst throws a flask to create a large wind spirit, which continuously pulls in targets while inflicting periodic Anemo damage. This large spirit can absorb Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro, dealing additional elemental damage and granting damage buffs corresponding to the absorbed element. Through her passive talents, she increases her teammates' Elemental Mastery whenever she triggers Swirl reactions or hits targets with her abilities, and she has a chance to produce double yields when synthesizing crafting materials.

Background

Stationed at the alchemy workshop in Mondstadt, Sucrose works alongside her colleague Timaeus under the guidance of Chief Alchemist Albedo. Through her dedicated work in bio-alchemy, she has successfully cultivated numerous unusual botanical specimens, such as dandelions with seeds six times their normal size and giant Sweet Flowers. During the Windblume Festival, she served as a special ambassador attempting to collect happy breaths in flasks to aid her alchemy. In the process, she met Collei, a visitor from Sumeru who shared a similar struggle with social anxiety. The two bonded deeply over their shared nature and formed a cherished friendship. She continues to assist the Knights of Favonius in testing new alchemical breakthroughs and resolving municipal crises.

Relationships

She holds immense respect for Albedo, her supervisor and master within the Knights of Favonius, learning alchemy under his guidance. She developed a warm and meaningful friendship with Collei after meeting her during the Windblume Festival, connecting over their shared shyness and offering each other mutual encouragement. Timaeus is her fellow alchemical colleague with whom she works at the workshop. The young knight Klee views Sucrose as a kind elder sister figure who once offered to create bouncing bombs for her. Additionally, her genetic traits bear similarities to Diona of the Kätzlein lineage, reflected in shared design elements such as paw prints on their footwear.

Trivia

In the original Chinese release, her name is written directly as Shatang (meaning granulated sugar), which was localized as Sucrose in English and Sukurōsu in Japanese. Such direct semantic translations of character names are quite rare in the game. Her favorite snack consists of pure sugar blocks extracted from Sweet Flowers, chosen purely for quick brain energy rather than flavor. In an early experiment, she accidentally created a powder that caused uncontrollable laughter; seeking medical help at the cathedral unintentionally led to Barbara losing her voice and pausing her idol activities for three days. In combat strategy, she became famous for enabling popular team compositions known as Sucrose Armed due to her powerful Swirl mechanics and team-wide mastery buffs.
