Overview
Dainsleif is a character in Genshin Impact. Formerly the captain of the Royal Guard in the fallen realm of Khaenri'ah, he is known by titles such as the Bough Keeper and the Twilight Sword. After his homeland was destroyed five hundred years ago, he was afflicted with a curse of immortality. Refusing to side with either the gods or the Abyss Order, he wanders Teyvat alone to thwart the Abyss's plans while serving as the primary narrator for official storyline trailers and character previews.
Appearance
Dainsleif has short blond hair with bangs framing his face and blue eyes featuring star-shaped irises. The right side of his face is covered by a dark half mask. He wears dark attire consisting of a high-collared jacket, black gloves, and a black cape lined with a starry pattern. Glowing blue vein-like corruption is visibly present on the right side of his body, particularly along his right arm.
Personality
Dainsleif exhibits a stoic and reserved demeanor, concealing a strong sense of justice and enduring grief over his destroyed homeland. He harbors deep resentment toward both the gods who eradicated Khaenri'ah and the Sinners who abandoned it. Beneath his stern exterior lies a compassionate nature, as he feels intense remorse for his transformed former subordinates. He also possesses a habit of speaking in solemn, cryptic riddles.
Abilities
Trained in the Black Serpent sword technique by his mentor Harden, Dainsleif wields a unique blue flame-like energy to strike and bind opponents. His combat capability allows him to breach elemental and Abyssal barriers almost instantaneously. Additionally, he wears a ring gifted by his brother that continuously resets his physical body, counteracting the structural decay caused by his immortal curse.
Background
Dainsleif trained at Khaenri'ah's knight academy before becoming the captain of the Royal Guard. When his older brother Vedrfolnir was imprisoned, Dainsleif assembled allies for a rescue mission, though those companions ultimately succumbed to Abyssal power to become the Five Sinners. During the cataclysm, he failed to prevent Khaenri'ah's collapse and received the curse of immortality. He later traveled Teyvat with the Traveler's sibling, but their differing beliefs led to a split, prompting him to pursue the Abyss Order's Loom of Fate scheme independently.
Relationships
He acts as a guide and ally to the Traveler, evaluating their choices through philosophical questions. His former traveling partner, the Traveler's sibling, now leads the Abyss Order, placing them at odds despite their past relationship. He harbors intense hostility toward his brother Vedrfolnir and the other Sinners, while feeling immense remorse for former subordinates like Halfdan. He also remains suspicious of Kaeya Alberich due to his descent from the Abyss Order's founder.
Trivia
His name originates from Dáinsleif, a legendary sword in Norse mythology. As the solemn narrator for official character showcase videos, his deep voice reading lighthearted ability names created a memorable contrast for fans. On occasions when guest characters like Alice or Neuvillette take over narration duties, players humorously joke that Dainsleif has taken time off.
