Hilichurl
Hilichurls are a ubiquitous tribe of humanoid monsters inhabiting the continent of Teyvat in Genshin Impact. Acting as standard primary adversaries, these primitive creatures live in small tribal communities across the wilderness. Despite their limited intellect, they are capable of manipulating elemental energy without a Vision, building crude shelters, and performing mystical rituals. Overview
Often manipulated by external entities like Abyss Mages, they frequently attack travelers, serving as foundational common enemies throughout the game.
Appearance
Hilichurls are dark-skinned humanoid creatures featuring long ears, horn-like projections, and a fluffy mane around their neck area. Their most signature trait is a bone-like mask that completely conceals their faces, paired with a simple loincloth. While basic Hilichurls resemble human children in stature, older Samachurls shrink in size, whereas Mitachurls and Lawachurls possess massive, muscular physiques. Afflictions or empowerments of specific elements alter their visual aura and equipment colors.
Personality
Hilichurls are driven largely by simple impulses such as eating meat, fighting, and building physical strength. Although quick to anger and prone to ambushing travelers for supplies, they also exhibit a surprisingly relaxed side, frequently seen taking naps or dancing around campfires in their encampments. While commonly perceived as unintelligent and aggressive beasts, certain individuals demonstrate peaceful inclinations when approached using their unique spoken dialect.
Abilities
In combat, Hilichurls utilize simple weaponry including clubs, crossbows, and shields crafted from wood, rock, or ice. They possess the unique habit of digging up Pyro, Cryo, or Electro Slimes from the ground to throw as explosive projectiles. Elderly Samachurls channel raw elemental powers to summon rainstorms, tornadoes, vines, or solid pillars, while larger Mitachurls and Lawachurls leverage immense strength using heavy axes, shields, and powerful elemental re-enforcements.
Background
Though observed in Teyvat for over a millennium, their population surged dramatically following the cataclysm 500 years ago. A significant portion of their kind originated from human civilizations cursed with immortality and bodily corruption, causing them to wear masks to hide their mutated faces from their own sight. Over centuries, their minds and souls suffer severe erosion, eventually leading dying individuals to seek dark, isolated places to quietly crumble into ash.
Relationships
Hilichurls are frequently coerced and commanded by Abyss Mages, serving as vanguard troops for the Abyss Order against human settlements. On the other hand, scholars like Ella Musk seek peaceful dialogue and cultural research through their language. Their historical ties connect them directly to ruined ancient civilizations across Teyvat and the fallen realm of Khaenri'ah.
Trivia
The name 'Hilichurl' is a compound word formed from 'hill' and 'churl' (meaning a rude or low-bred person). A notable special variant known as the 'Unusual Hilichurl' wears a suit, attacks by throwing cabbages and Homu plushies, and is voiced by miHoYo co-founder and CEO Forrest Liu (Dawei), after whom the character's design is modeled.
