Overview
Lan Yan is a playable character from Liyue in Genshin Impact. Hailing from Chenyu Vale, she is a skilled rattan weaver affiliated with the local craft association and an Anemo catalyst wielder. As a descendant of the Lan clan with origins in traditional Qimen Arts, she balances her craft with a free-spirited, bright nature, frequently wandering through the mountains of her homeland.
Appearance
Lan Yan has very long black hair with parted bangs and hair intakes, paired with purple eyes. She wears a short sleeveless green dress featuring side slits, along with long aqua-colored detached sleeves and black high heels. A thigh strap is worn on her left leg. Her outfit is heavily adorned with silver jewelry, including a bird-themed hair ornament, a silver hairband, a necklace, earrings, arm bracelets, and multiple rings.
Personality
Lively and gentle as a mountain stream, Lan Yan possesses a warm and considerate demeanor. She naturally loves spending time outdoors—roaming the woods, swimming in creeks, and crafting under trees. Rather than confining herself to a workshop, she relies on intuition and environment for her creative work. She easily puts others at ease, often offering a comforting word or a sip of water. A childhood fright from eerie traditional wicker dolls motivated her to craft more refined, reassuring designs of her own.
Abilities
In battle, Lan Yan attacks using a crescent-like catalyst to deliver Anemo strikes. Her Elemental Skill grants a defensive shield scaling off her Attack power while dashing forward; contacting an opponent lets her leap backward to launch follow-up attacks. If her Skill absorbs Pyro, Hydro, Electro, or Cryo via Swirl, the shield converts to that element with enhanced damage absorption. Her Elemental Burst pulls in nearby enemies and objects while dealing continuous Anemo area damage.
Background
Born into a branch of the Lan family—a lineage known for Qimen Arts—Lan Yan grew up surrounded by traditional practices. Although her family's martial arts faded into simple performance, her interest in crafting led her to master rattan weaving beyond her elders' expertise. During the lead-up to the Lantern Rite, she journeyed to Liyue Port on official business while investigating her grandfather's ominous divinations. This led her to intervene in spiritual anomalies around Wuwang Hill, using her clan's illusion techniques to assist her allies.
Relationships
She shares a longstanding friendship with Gaming, having once repaired a woven basket he accidentally broke as a child. She maintains a close bond with a elder relative from the main Lan branch, from whom she learns advanced Qimen knowledge. During her travels in Liyue, she allies with Keqing, Hu Tao, Qiqi, and the Traveler, working closely with them to navigate dangerous spiritual boundaries.
Trivia
Her constellation name, 'Xuan Yan,' refers to a black swallow in classical literature. The heavy silver jewelry she wears consists of protective charms gifted to her by various relatives, which she finds comforting despite their weight. She has a strong fondess for flowers, enjoys drinking fresh floral tea, and prepares a signature pastry made with Qinxin flowers.
