Overview
Il Dottore, whose true name is Zandik, is the Second of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers in Genshin Impact. Known by his title "The Doctor," he is a former scholar of the Sumeru Akademiya. Possessing extraordinary intelligence and advanced engineering skill, he functions as a calculating mad scientist who conducts ruthless human experimentation and body modifications without moral restraint or regard for human life. He views all of Teyvat as a personal laboratory for his blasphemous research.
Appearance
He is a man with short light blue hair, prominent sidelocks, red eyes, and a small test-tube earring. He wears a mask obscuring the upper portion of his face, paired with a long white coat featuring fur trim, a blue dress shirt, and black gloves. His visual presentation varies between media and age segments: in the official manga, he wears a black-and-white mask, while his in-game prime segment, known as "Omega Build," features a dark, beak-shaped eye mask alongside raven-like shoulder decorations.
Personality
Driven by an obsessive craving for knowledge, Dottore is intensely arrogant, calculating, and completely lacking in empathy. He treats humans, including his own subordinates, merely as test subjects or tools to be expended for his research. Describing himself as thoroughly selfish, he habitually abandons subjects without cleanup once his interest wanes. While supremely confident, he is also highly pragmatic, preferring to neutralize adversaries through brainwashing, hypnosis, or traps rather than engaging in direct combat.
Abilities
Although he does not possess a Vision, Dottore possesses brilliant scientific intellect, specializing in ancient ruin machinery and biological synthesis. Using branches of the World Tree, he engineered "Segment" technology to create autonomous clones of himself across various ages. His technical accomplishments include inventing and mass-producing Delusions, operating floating funnel-shaped combat devices, manipulating the Akasha system, utilizing hypnotic devices, and constructing artificial divine entities powered by Gnoses.
Background
Born in Sumeru, Zandik studied at the Sumeru Akademiya until his inhumane experiments and illicit ruins research led to his permanent exile. He was recruited into the Fatui by Pierro, who offered unlimited resources for his work. Disguised as the Fontaine mechanic Escher, he orchestrated the disaster at Tatarasuna in Inazuma, manipulating the puppet Kabukimono. Dottore conducted brutal experiments on Eleazar and god remnants, and later assisted in building an artificial god in Sumeru. Although forced to destroy all active Segments during negotiations with Nahida, he persisted with high-stakes experiments targeting the World Tree.
Relationships
Pierro, the Fatui Director, acts as his superior who brought him into the organization, while Pantalone is a close business associate who collaborates with him based on shared interests. Conversely, he is deeply despised by the Wanderer, whom he deceived and manipulated during the Tatarasuna crisis. Fellow Harbingers Arlecchino and Sandrone harbor intense hostility toward him due to his desire to use children and subordinates as experimental material. He also shares a bitter history with Diluc Ragnvindr of Mondstadt stemming from incidents involving the dragon Ursa and Delusions.
Trivia
His codename "Il Dottore" originates from the stock character of the pretentious, pseudo-intellectual doctor in the Italian theatrical tradition of Commedia dell'arte. In the narrative, he is highlighted as one of the few figures who holds knowledge regarding the fundamental truth that the sky of Teyvat is fake.
