Overview
Thoma is a character appearing in Genshin Impact. Originally hailing from Mondstadt, he currently resides in Inazuma, where he serves as the housekeeper and chief retainer for the Yashiro Commission's Kamisato Clan. In addition to his formal household duties, he operates as a well-connected local fixer in Ritou, leveraging an extensive network of personal relationships. Exceptionally friendly and adaptable, he handles everything from domestic chores to diplomatic negotiations, providing vital support to the leaders of the Kamisato Clan.
Appearance
Thoma has blonde hair bound in a ponytail with parted central bangs, paired with green eyes. He wears a headband equipped with horn-like decorations, beneath which a scar lies hidden on his forehead. His outfit comprises a black inner shirt under a sleeveless, cropped red jacket, black fingerless gloves, stud earrings, and a neck chain resembling military dog tags.
Personality
Thoma possesses an exceptionally warm and friendly demeanor, allowing him to easily connect with people from all walks of life. He takes pride in his domestic capabilities, excelling at cleaning and cooking, though he also displays a playful side by hosting chaotic hotpot gatherings. Compassionate by nature, he frequently feeds stray cats and dogs and even knits small garments for them. However, behind his easygoing expression lies fierce loyalty to the Kamisato Clan; he will unhesitatingly drop his smiling demeanor to deal harshly with anyone threatening his masters.
Abilities
Thoma is a Pyro polearm user who acts as a defensive shield support. His normal attack, Swiftshatter Spear, performs up to four consecutive strikes. His Elemental Skill, Blazing Blessing, plants his spear to deliver a kick dealing AoE Pyro damage while generating a Blazing Barrier scaled off his max HP. This shield boasts high Pyro absorption efficiency and can be stacked and refreshed. His Elemental Burst, Crimson Oyoroi, deals AoE Pyro damage and grants a fiery armor state, triggering coordinated Pyro strikes and additional shield stacking whenever an active character uses normal attacks. He also has a passive talent that increases fish yield when fishing in Inazuma.
Background
Born in Mondstadt to an Inazuman father and a Mondstadt mother, Thoma set sail for Inazuma to find his father. However, a storm destroyed his ship, leaving him stranded and penniless until Kamisato Ayato took him in, leading him to become a trusted retainer of the Kamisato Clan. During the Vision Hunt Decree, he was captured to have his Vision publicly confiscated, but the Traveler intervened; Thoma threw his polearm at the Raiden Shogun to secure their escape. After the decree was revoked, he helped restore order in Inazuma and later took a long-awaited leave to return to Mondstadt, where he tended to his family home and caught up with old friends.
Relationships
Thoma shares a bond of deep mutual trust with his masters, Kamisato Ayato and Kamisato Ayaka, interacting with them as close friends despite his position as a retainer. He forms a strong friendship with the Traveler and Paimon after helping them upon their arrival in Ritou. In Inazuma, he maintains friendly relations with local figures such as Yoimiya and Arataki Itto, and enjoys caring for Taroumaru, the Shiba Inu at Komore Teahouse. During his visit to Mondstadt, he also catches up and drinks with Kaeya of the Knights of Favonius.
Trivia
His title, "Protector From Afar," references an armor-clad warrior arriving from a foreign land. His blonde hair and military identification tag-like necklace led fans to give him various fond nicknames. Additionally, his introduction scene, where he playfully hid behind the Komore Teahouse counter and barked to pretend he was the Shiba Inu Taroumaru, remains a famously memorable moment among players.
