Overview

Rhinedottir is a character in Genshin Impact, recognized as the chief alchemist of the fallen subterranean nation of Khaenri'ah and one of its legendary Five Sinners. Also known by the title Gold and her Hexenzirkel codename R, she achieved the pinnacle of forbidden alchemy, creating lifeforms that defied the established laws of Teyvat. Her creations range from cataclysmic abyssal monsters to the human homunculus Albedo. Having consumed the Heart of Naberius, she has fused with one of the Four Shades, becoming a transcendent entity possessing authority over life.

Appearance

Rhinedottir features long blonde hair with an orange gradient and a distinctive double-helix strand, along with heterochromic eyes displaying gray on the left and yellow on the right, each bearing unique symbols. Her ensemble consists of a black and white dress embellished with gold accents, a white hood-like veil, a headpiece, and a single long black glove on her right arm. Floating behind her is a golden halo styled after a double-helix DNA structure; this halo and parts of her hair illuminate in blue when the consciousness of Naberius speaks through her.

Personality

Rhinedottir embodies a complex dual nature, balancing brilliant academic intellect with a streak of madness driven by Abyssal influence. Prior to restoring her composure through her fusion with Naberius, her temperament oscillated between cold cruelty and sharp rationality. Despite her dangerous research, she displays genuine warmth and maternal affection toward her created son Albedo, taking pride in his growth and entrusting him with profound tasks. She also maintains warm, friendly ties with her companions in the Hexenzirkel, showing that her personality encompasses deep emotional bonds alongside her relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Abilities

Rhinedottir mastered the pinnacle of Khemia, the forbidden alchemical art of Khaenri'ah, granting her the ability to synthesize artificial life forms that transcend the natural concepts of Teyvat. She can manifest diverse monstrous entities as well as a perfect homunculus. By claiming a portion of the Abyssal power harvested from the Prince, she acquired transcendent strength capable of rivaling the world. Additionally, by consuming the Heart of Naberius, she integrated the power and authority of the Shade of Life into herself, securing both divine capabilities and mental clarity.

Background

Rhinedottir served as the chief alchemist of Khaenri'ah and joined the Hexenzirkel as a founding member. On the eve of Khaenri'ah's fall, she joined forces to rescue her imprisoned brother Vedrfolnir, but ended up usurping Abyssal power from the Prince alongside four companions, becoming known as the Five Sinners. During the Cataclysm, her toxic creations ravaged Teyvat. Following the disaster, she refined her techniques in underground ruins to create Albedo, whom she raised and educated in alchemy. After discovering and consuming the Heart of Naberius, she left Albedo a recommendation letter to her friend Alice in Mondstadt before departing.

Relationships

Albedo is Rhinedottir's proudest homunculus creation, whom she raised as both a pupil and a son. Alice is her close friend within the Hexenzirkel, to whom Rhinedottir entrusted Albedo's guidance. She shares a fateful past with her fellow Sinners—Vedrfolnir, Hroptatyr, Surtalogi, and Rerir—with whom she absorbed Abyssal power, while Dainsleif actively tracks her movements. Furthermore, she shares her physical existence with Naberius, the Shade of Life whose consciousness resides within her and occasionally attempts to restrain her uninhibited actions.

Trivia

Her name originates from Old Norse meaning "daughter of the Rhine," inspired by the Rhine Maidens from Richard Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. Within the Hexenzirkel, her unique signature is the "Non-existent Flower," reflecting her unmatched capability to synthesize plant life that does not naturally exist in the world. Among her various creations, she also crafted a cat servant named Sebas.
