Varesa

Overview

Varesa is a playable character in Genshin Impact, hailing from the Collective of Plenty (Teteocan) in the Natlan region. Assigned as a 5-star Electro Catalyst user, she works in her family's orchard, selling fruits and vegetables while maintaining a relaxed, easygoing routine. Beneath her mild-mannered exterior lies immense physical strength. When taking up arms to defend her homeland or combat evil, she dons a mask to fight as a mysterious vigilante hero, drawing on dynamic luchador-style martial arts under the tutelage of Iansan.

Appearance

Varesa features long pink hair with green streaks, styled into twin braids with a center-parted fringe, an ahoge, and an X-shaped hair accessory. She possesses bovine ears, two horns, a tail, and purple eyes. Her attire includes a crop top sweater with a chest cutout, long detached sleeves, a short black miniskirt, and an exposed midriff. Her lower body is styled with asymmetrical footwear elements, including a white thigh-high sock, a leg warmer, and a bandage.

Personality

Varesa is laid-back, gentle, and notoriously food-obsessed. She treats travels like picnics, constantly thinking about local delicacies and finding cozy sleeping spots. Possessing a massive appetite, she easily dominates competitive eating contests. Her deeply kind nature makes her reluctant to use her immense physical power against friends or tribe members, leading to early eliminations in friendly tournaments. However, when confronting genuine threats, her heroic spirit ignites, transforming her into a fierce, bold warrior. She detests skipping meals, as running on an empty stomach quickly drains her energy.

Abilities

Though equipped with a Catalyst, Varesa functions as a close-range Electro combatant using heavy punches, headbutts, and body checks. Her Charged Attack propels her into the air, allowing her to fluidly chained into powerful Plunging Attacks that deal Electro damage and gather Nightsoul points. Accumulating full Nightsoul points triggers her Fierce Passion state, donning her wrestler mask and speeding up her attack motions. Her Elemental Skill offers a quick forward dash or a held sprint mode that enables fast traversal across land, water, and liquid Phlogiston. Her Elemental Burst, Shining Vent!, performs a devastating airborne dropkick, which can transform into a low-cost variant technique following a plunge.

Background

Born on a tranquil day following the calming of the Tuolani Volcano, Varesa exhibited extraordinary physical gifts from a young age. Inspired by heroic tales told by her father—particularly the legend of a masked champion—she crafted her own mask to emulate her idols. She grew up managing her family's fruit orchard while training under Iansan to manage her extraordinary strength. During the Abyss invasion, she protected her home settlement from corruption. While she secretly beat back monsters along trade routes disguised as a vigilante, she only realized she was the acclaimed "Masked Hero" of local rumors after being questioned by her patrol colleagues.

Relationships

Varesa is the student of Iansan, who guides her physical conditioning and acknowledges both her overly relaxed nature and her violent effectiveness when masked. She forms a close bond with the Traveler through tribe tours, eating contests, and an incident involving a lingering Sumeru deity within local green mushrooms. This event led to an agreement with Tighnari for Sumeru's Amurta darshan to conduct periodic ecology checks in her region. During the Gloryflower competition, she collaborated with Chasca to wrap up event logistics while looking after recovering saurian companions.

Trivia

Her name is derived from Mbaba Mwana Waresa, the goddess of fertility and rainbows in Zulu mythology. Due to her unmatched appetite, she competes in eating contests under a special handicap category equivalent to 30 standard portions. Her idle animation depicts her flattening a massive multi-layered hamburger with her bare hands to save time while eating. Additionally, she is notable among playable Natlan characters for lacking an established Ancient Name.
