Ganyu

Overview

Ganyu is a character in Genshin Impact who serves as the general secretary for the Yuehai Pavilion under the Liyue Qixing. As a half-human and half-qilin adeptus over three thousand years old, she has served Liyue since the Archon War under an ancient contract with Rex Lapis. Wielding a Cryo Vision and a bow, she oversees the complex flow of administrative documentation and city affairs with unmatched efficiency. Gentle and elegant, she balances her adeptal heritage with an enduring commitment to the prosperity of Liyue Port.

Appearance

Ganyu features long blue hair styled in a jellyfish-like shape with M-shaped bangs, an ahoge, and sidelocks, accompanied by gradient pinkish-purple eyes. A pair of red adeptal horns extends from her head. Her standard attire consists of a backless, halterneck black bodystocking with gold trim and bare shoulders, worn under a white bodice. She wears detached sleeves, black gloves, and a bell around her neck. Her alternate outfit, Twilight Blossom, presents a black and blue formal dress adorned with a Qingxin flower hairpiece.

Personality

Ganyu is polite, gentle, and peaceful, demonstrating a formidable work ethic rooted in her contract with Rex Lapis. Despite her outstanding secretarial competence, she harbors a slightly airheaded side, occasionally forgetting to convey key details when performing tasks. She strictly follows a vegetarian diet and enjoys the bitter taste of Qingxin flower petals. Self-conscious about her childhood weight, she carefully manages her appetite to maintain her form. Although she sometimes experiences feelings of solitude as a half-adeptus living among mortals, she finds comfort in her connections with the people of Liyue.

Abilities

Ganyu utilizes a bow and Cryo elemental abilities in combat. Her normal attack, Liutian Archery, performs a series of bow shots. Her charged attack features a two-stage charge that fires a Frostflake Arrow, which blooms upon contact into a Frostflake Bloom dealing wide-area Cryo damage. Her passive talent Undivided Heart increases the Critical Rate of subsequent charged shots. Her Elemental Skill, Trail of the Qilin, allows her to dash backward while leaving an Ice Lotus decoy that taunts enemies and deals area Cryo damage upon spawn and destruction. Her Elemental Burst, Celestial Shower, summons a Sacred Cryo Pearl to continuously rain down ice shards over an area, while her utility talent refunds spent ores during bow forging.

Background

Born as a half-qilin adeptus, Ganyu was raised by Cloud Retainer. Over three thousand years ago during the Archon War, she entered into a contract with Rex Lapis to defend Liyue. Since the founding of Liyue Port, she has served as the head secretary for the Liyue Qixing, overseeing the city's administrative matters for centuries. In the main story, she acts as Ningguang's emissary to invite the Traveler to the Jade Chamber and fights alongside the adepti to defend the harbor from Osial. After temporarily mistaking a temporary reassignment for forced retirement and retreating to Jueyun Karst, she gained renewed perspective with the Traveler's help and returned to her administrative duties.

Relationships

Ganyu holds deep respect for Rex Lapis, remaining steadfast in fulfilling her ancient contract. She maintains strong professional trust with Liyue Qixing members Ningguang and Keqing, receiving high praise for her administrative excellence. Although she revere her mentor Cloud Retainer (Xianyun), she is constantly flustered by her master's tendency to share embarrassing stories from her youth. She shares a warm, sisterly bond with her fellow disciple Shenhe, receives training advice from Xiao, and is humorously linked to Qiqi through the latter's search for the legendary "Cocogoat."

Trivia

Ganyu is affectionately referred to as the "Cocogoat" by players, referencing Qiqi's search for a mythic adeptal beast associated with coconut milk. Another widely recognized joke stems from Cloud Retainer's recollection of a plump young Ganyu rolling down a mountain. Despite the bitter flavor of Qingxin flowers, Ganyu considers them a delicacy, refraining from growing them near her workspace to avoid overeating. Her signature dish is Prosperous Peace, a variation of Universal Peace. In combat gameplay, she is heavily associated with Amos' Bow due to how effectively its skill enhances her charged attacks.
