Overview
Wriothesley is a character from the open-world RPG Genshin Impact, hailing from the region of Fontaine. He serves as the Administrator of the Fortress of Meropide, an underwater exile colony for criminals, and holds the title of Duke granted by the Palais Mermonia. Possessing a Cryo Vision aligned with Ousia, he utilizes a Catalyst in combat but fights primarily as a close-quarters brawler using mechanical gauntlets.
Appearance
Wriothesley has short black hair with silver streaks, blue-violet eyes, and hair styled with tufts resembling ears. He wears a fur-trimmed coat draped over his shoulders, a collared shirt, a grey vest, and a loose red necktie. His neck and arms are wrapped in bandages, and he wears black fingerless gloves, stud earrings, leg straps, and knee-high boots. Handcuffs hang from his belt, and scars are visible on his muscular frame.
Personality
Wriothesley is pragmatic, highly perceptive, and sophisticated despite his rugged exterior. He commands respect through keen intellect and strict adherence to established rules rather than unnecessary displays of authority. Calm and composed under pressure, he enjoys sipping tea and reading the newspaper in his office during downtime. Beneath his sharp mind lies a deep belief in providing inmates with structure and peace, offering them an opportunity to live orderly lives.
Abilities
Wriothesley operates as a melee Cryo main attacker utilizing mechanical gauntlets alongside his Catalyst. His Normal Attack delivers rapid Cryo punches, while his Charged Attack delivers an uppercut capable of breaking ores and heavy structures. Using his Elemental Skill, Icefang Rush, he dashes forward to enter a reinforced state that boosts his interruption resistance and consumes HP to empower his Normal Attacks. When his HP drops below a specific threshold, he gains an enhanced Charged Attack that costs no stamina, hits harder, and restores his HP upon landing. His Elemental Burst, Gunmetal Wolfbite, drives his knuckles forward to deal multi-stage area Cryo damage, followed by a surging blade that strikes with Ousia-aligned Cryo energy. Additionally, his crafting talent grants a chance to double output when combining weapon ascension materials.
Background
Raised as an orphan, Wriothesley was taken in by foster parents who feigned benevolence while secretly trafficking the children in their care. Upon discovering this truth in his teens, he killed them to protect the other children, accepted his sentence, and was incarcerated in the Fortress of Meropide. After spending years inside, he eventually overthrew the abusive former administrator and took charge himself. He overhauled the prison's living conditions, implemented fair labor reforms, and earned the title of Duke for his service. Recognizing the threat of the ancient prophecy facing Fontaine, he secretly directed the construction of a massive vessel, the Wingalet, in the restricted depths of the fortress to ensure the survival of his people.
Relationships
Wriothesley shares a close professional and personal dynamic with Chief Justice Neuvillette, with whom he frequently exchanges gifts and tea. He places immense trust in Sigewinne, the head nurse of the fortress, assisting her medical efforts and investigations. He also maintains a strong partnership with the Champion Duelist Clorinde, relying on her for security during critical crises. When Fatui operatives Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet infiltrated the fortress to investigate the disappearance of Childe, Wriothesley anticipated their movements and skillfully managed the situation.
Trivia
His name originates from the British noble house Wriothesley, while his Constellation, Cerberus, references the mythical multi-headed underworld guard dog. Due to his melee punching combat style and Japanese voice acting by Daisuke Ono, fans often draw comparisons to iconic brawler characters like Jotaro Kujo. Additionally, his character demonstration theme song stands out in the game's soundtrack for featuring an electronic music style rather than traditional orchestral arrangements.
