Overview

Crucabena is a character from the action role-playing game Genshin Impact and its derivative media. She was formerly the Fourth Fatui Harbinger known by the title "The Knave" and served as the founder and director of the House of the Hearth, an orphanage located in Fontaine. Referring to herself as the "Mother" of the orphans, she ran the institution until she was defeated and killed in combat by Peruere, who subsequently inherited her seat and title.

Appearance

Crucabena has long, dark pinkish-red hair styled into a braid, with bangs draped over one side of her face to obscure one eye, paired with blue-gray eyes and prominent crimson lipstick. Her attire features a white blouse underneath a dark mantle, accented by a grayish-purple tie with a brooch. She wears black gloves, a long pencil skirt featuring a side slit, and thigh-high boots.

Personality

Outwardly, Crucabena presents herself as a benevolent, loving mother toward the orphans under her care. In reality, she is a ruthless and manipulative figure who views the children solely as disposable tools to be trained into Fatui operatives. Incapable of genuine maternal affection, she treats even her biological daughter with cold cruelty, maintaining absolute authority through a harsh regime of survival of the fittest.

Abilities

Crucabena commands Hydro element abilities in battle. As a former Fatui Harbinger, she possesses formidable combat capabilities, demonstrated by her ability to calm, withstand, and initially overpower Peruere's attacks during their duel before the latter fully unlocked her hidden powers.

Background

Under her management, the House of the Hearth acted as a training facility where orphans were subjected to brutal combat and forced into lethal duels to decide the strongest candidate, known as the 'King.' Defeated candidates and defectors were either executed or handed over to the Harbinger Dottore for experimentation. After her biological daughter Clervie perished in a duel against Peruere, Peruere eventually challenged Crucabena directly a year later. Crucabena was slain in the duel when Peruere unleashed the full extent of the Crimson Moon's power.

Relationships

She was the biological mother of Clervie, whom she treated with the same cold detachment as the other orphans, repeatedly capturing her when she tried to run away. She took a special interest in Peruere (who would later become Arlecchino) due to her unique lineage, aiming to mold her into the ultimate 'King'—though Peruere ultimately rebelled and killed her. Crucabena also maintained a relationship with the Harbinger Dottore, handing over failed orphans to him for human experiments.

Trivia

The name Crucabena is derived from a French rendering of Ceridwen, a goddess associated with death and rebirth in Welsh mythology. At the site of her final duel with Peruere stands a gravestone inscribed with an epitaph penned by Peruere herself. In the game, this monument serves as the entrance to the weekly boss domain for Arlecchino.
