Overview
Ronova, also known as the Ruler of Death or Tuonetar, is a character from Genshin Impact. Created by Phanes, the Primordial One, as one of the Four Shades, she serves as the shade who governs death in Teyvat. As one of the oldest divine entities in Teyvat's history, she plays a pivotal role in establishing the laws of Natlan and enforcing divine punishment.
Appearance
Ronova appears as a female with very long white hair, bangs hanging between her eyes, and yellow eyes. She wears hair ornaments along with a transparent white veil. Her outfit consists of a black dress over a black bodysuit, paired with black gloves and high heels. She possesses large red wings adorned with multiple eyes on her back. Additionally, she can manifest as a terrifying entity taking the form of six red eyes peering through a crimson rift in the sky.
Personality
Originally possessing a merciful nature that granted death as a peaceful rest rather than pain, Ronova became deeply lethargic and self-deprecating after drawing the displeasure of the Heavenly Principles. She exhibits an indifferent and tired demeanor toward most events, showing little emotional reaction even when her own curse is turned against her through a loophole, maintaining focus purely on the execution of rules and pacts.
Abilities
As the Ruler of Death, Ronova commands absolute authority over mortality, capable of declaring and enforcing the death of spaces and living entities within them. She wields enough divine power to cast a curse of immortality upon all pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns. In Natlan, she bestowed a portion of her authority to reinforce the Ley Lines and establish system mechanics such as the Ode of Resurrection.
Background
Created by Phanes during the era of the Seven Sovereigns, Ronova originally helped Xbalanque, the first Pyro Archon, found the rules of Natlan and the Night Kingdom to combat the Abyss. However, her assistance angered the Heavenly Principles, leading to her disillusionment. During the Cataclysm five hundred years ago, she inflicted the Curse of Immortality on Khaenri'ahns by divine command. In modern events, she appears in Natlan to claim Mavuika's life as part of their ancestral pact, but ultimately accepts Capitano's logical paradox, allowing him to take the sacrifice instead.
Relationships
She was created by Phanes (the Primordial One) and serves alongside her fellow Shades: Istaroth, Asmoday, and Naberius. She previously formed a pact with Xbalanque, the first Pyro Archon, to help protect Natlan. Capitano holds resentment toward her and the Heavenly Principles for cursing his people, eventually confronting her with a legal paradox to fulfill his own objective.
Trivia
Her name Ronova is derived from Ronove, the 27th demon of the Ars Goetia. She is the first of the Four Shades to physically appear on screen in the game's main storyline.
