Overview
Hanaoka Yuzu is a character from Blue Archive. A first-year student at Millennium Science School, she serves as the president of the Game Development Department. Extremely anxious in social situations, she spends much of her time hidden inside a locker in her clubroom. Despite her extreme shyness, her passion for gaming and creation is unmatched, and she leads her fellow club members through various game development endeavors while secretly holding a reputation as an extraordinary player.
Appearance
Yuzu features partially braided red hair, prominent bangs exposing her forehead, and blue eyes. Above her head floats an orange-yellow halo designed after a power switch symbol. Her default attire consists of an oversized jacket paired with bare feet and white-and-yellow sandals bearing the Millennium Science School logo. In alternative scenarios, she also wears a maid outfit or a specialized tight suit designed for piloting heavy machinery.
Personality
Yuzu is severely introverted and socially anxious, often becoming overwhelmed when forced to interact with others. To cope with distress, she frequently retreats into narrow enclosures like clubroom lockers or cardboard boxes. However, when it comes to playing and developing video games, she displays immense dedication and perseverance. Because of her extraordinary natural talent at gaming, she tends to design games tailored to her own superhuman standards, inadvertently creating absurdly difficult experiences for average players.
Abilities
In combat, Yuzu operates "Nyan's Dash," a customized M320 grenade launcher outfitted with a handheld gaming console frame. Her attacks provide wide-area explosive and armor-penetrating firepower that bypasses obstacles. Known in gaming circles as "UZQueen," she possesses extraordinary dynamic vision and processing speed, enabling dominant performance in fighting and rhythm games. Additionally, she functions as the primary programmer for her club, displays high stealth skills using cardboard boxes, and can pilot the combat machine Avant-Garde Mk.3.
Background
Trauma from severe public criticism of her early game prototype initially drove Yuzu to isolate herself inside her clubroom locker. Her luck changed when Saiba Momoi and Saiba Midori played the prototype, fell in love with it, and joined her to officially establish the Game Development Department. To prevent the club from being disbanded due to low performance, the group rescued and enrolled Tendou Arisu, submitted an entry to the Millennium Award, and saved their club. She continues to support her allies through major school crises.
Relationships
Saiba Momoi and Saiba Midori are Yuzu's cherished clubmates who embraced her initial game and gave her the courage to remain active. Tendou Arisu is a close friend and junior member whom Yuzu helped integrate into the club. Kei recognizes Yuzu's expertise in programming within the group. Towards Sensei, Yuzu maintains deep trust, relying on them for guidance and encouragement to overcome her social anxiety through various tasks and part-time jobs.
Trivia
Her given name is believed to reference the visual novel developer Yuzu-Soft or the Yuzu emulator, while her surname Hanaoka likely nods to Nintendo's history with hanafuda cards. Scholars and fans also note thematic parallels in her character design to the Greek philosopher Socrates and the mythological figure Persephone. Due to her gameplay mechanics relying heavily on high-variance critical hits, players affectionally nickname her high-risk, high-reward combat playstyle "Yuzu Pachi."
